Director General HERA (Health Emergency Preparedness & Response) at European Commission

Today’s European Commission proposal for a modern next multi annual budget framework (#MFF) marks an important step forward in the EU’s efforts to build a more resilient and better-prepared Union. As one of the first deliverables of the EU Preparedness Union Strategy, the proposal introduces #UCPM/#HER – a dedicated instrument combining civil protection and health emergency response. For health security the proposal foresees funding under this instrument for surveillance, medical stockpiles, and procurement to ensure better detection, monitoring, and response to cross-border threats. This will reinforces our capacity to prepare Europe to respond to the complex risks of tomorrow. To ensure a seamless «end to end«  approach on health preparedness and response continues to be secured , the equally needed research and innovation actions would be eligible under two other funding sources : the future #HorizonEurope and the new #EuropeanCompetitivenessFund where a dedicated window is foreseen for health, biotech, agriculture and bioeconomy. The ECF will drive strategic investment into new technologies and catalyse private public investment. Both, Horizon Europe and the Competitiveness Fund will enable support along the entire research/innovation investment journey. Together all three proposals set out a pathway for 2028-2034 for a sustained health emergency approach to secure enhanced protection to the EU citizen for the rising challenges we face.   👉🏻 Read more: https://lnkd.in/ezvrq6n6   #UCPM #EUHealth #PreparednessUnion

  • After six months of work, the peer review report on Land Brandenburg’s wildfire risk management system is out!   Prepared jointly by experts from Spain, Italy, and Portugal, with support from the CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici, German authorities, and the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism, the review assessed Brandenburg’s wildfire governance and disaster risk management. 🌲 One unique challenge? Unexploded ordnance scattered across approximately 292,000 hectares of forest - posing serious risks to forest management and firefighting operations. 📌 Key recommendations include: • Developing a comprehensive wildfire risk management strategy • Better integrating wildfire prevention into forest and land-use planning — with special attention to Wildland-Urban Interface areas • Increasing support for local authorities and improving communication with the public and key stakeholders • Establishing a Wildfire Competence Centre to support coordination and expertise-sharing   This is the first regional peer review in Germany, setting a precedent for future collaboration on disaster preparedness.   Together, we are better prepared.   Learn more: europa.eu/!F9yFMT © European Union, 2025.

  • 💣 Millions of hidden dangers. One global mission. Did you know that millions of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) still threaten civilian lives every day? The European Union is actively helping to tackle this challenge. Why? Because Mine Action saves lives, restores livelihoods, and is a precondition for social and economic recovery. In Ukraine, the most mine-affected country in the world, the European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments is stepping up to the challenge. Since 2022, together with Member States and partners such as Switzerland, we have mobilised more than €380 million – contributing to clearing around 37,000 km². But Ukraine is not the only country facing the dangers of landmines and UXO. From clearance, training, and equipment provision to long-term capacity building, EU support to mine action enables stability, recovery, and safe return globally. 🌐 This includes support in key regions and countries such as the South Caucasus, Syria and Libya. This is #EUForeignPolicy in action.

  • Wildfires may last days or weeks, but their impact can last for years. In 2021, a massive wildfire burned for two weeks in Sierra Bermeja, Spain, destroying rare forests, threatening communities, and leaving behind a fragile, exposed landscape. As the flames raged, Copernicus Emergency stepped in to support the response. We sent maps based on satellite imagery and geospatial analysis to help authorities track the fire’s spread and coordinate emergency efforts. Some weeks ago we’ve carried out a new risk assessment to evaluate how the landscape has recovered. Our maps show where forests have survived, where recovery has struggled, and where erosion and landslides still pose risks. 🛰️ EU Space, EU Science, Research and Innovation

  • What have vineyards got to do with wildfires? 🍇🔥 More than you might think. As wildfires grow more intense across Europe, well-managed vineyards are proving to be natural firebreaks - slowing flames and giving firefighters better access to the terrain. This approach is being tested through the EU-funded Fire Wine project, part of the Horizon 2020 FIRE-RES initiative. In regions across Spain, France, Portugal and Italy, wine producers are adopting fire-smart land management: clearing undergrowth, maintaining buffer strips, and working closely with local forestry services. In Catalonia, even smoke-exposed grapes are being turned into Vi Fumat — a wine that tells a story of innovation. With the right support, vineyards can help protect people, nature and rural livelihoods.   👉 Read more about this innovative approach to wildfire prevention in the full article: https://europa.eu/!kWgVXk EU Agriculture and Food

A more resilient Europe starts with stronger crisis preparedness. Today, the European Commission launches two key initiatives under the Preparedness Union agenda: ✅ The EU Stockpiling Strategy ✅ The Medical Countermeasures Strategy   Together, they aim to boost the EU’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to crises - from energy blackouts and pandemics to natural disasters and armed threats. 🔹 The Stockpiling Strategy is designed to secure access to essential goods - like medicines, food, fuel and water - by improving coordination, strengthening supply chains and filling critical gaps when needed.   🔹 The Medical Countermeasures Strategy focuses on accelerating the development, production and availability of lifesaving tools - such as vaccines, treatments, diagnostics and protective equipment - for future health emergencies.   These strategies mark a major step toward a safer, better-prepared Europe. 📖 Read more: https://europa.eu/!JpFMBQ © European Union, 2025⁣

  • From crisis to peace: The EU’s rapid response for global stability   In today’s complex security landscape, the European Union plays a crucial role in preventing conflict, building peace, and responding swiftly to crises worldwide. Through the Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI) and in partnership with NGOs, UN agencies, and regional bodies, the EU turns foreign policy into real-world action.   🔹 Over the past decade, the EU has financed more than 1,000 projects supporting peace mediation, transitional justice, reintegration, and crisis response in conflict-affected and post-crisis settings.   🔹 These actions are supported under the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI), allowing for both rapid interventions and long-term peacebuilding strategies that address the root causes of instability.   🛠️ Flexibility and local context guide every step, whether it’s supporting civil society, strengthening rule of law, or responding to political opportunities for peace.   🌍 In a time of increasing global challenges, the EU remains committed to safeguarding human rights, security and resilience, not just in its neighbourhood, but worldwide.   Discover more: https://europa.eu/!J9gdrC

  • 🔥 As wildfires begin to impact multiple countries across Europe, EU solidarity is once again in action on the ground. In Greece, Bulgarian firefighters worked side by side with their Greek counterparts in Halkidiki to contain the flames. In France, Romanian teams have joined local responders near Perpignan to help tackle a wildfire. These deployments are part of the EU’s summer wildfire preparedness, which has positioned nearly 650 firefighters from 14 European countries in high-risk areas across France, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. In addition, 22 firefighting airplanes and 4 helicopters are stationed in 10 Member States, ready to support national efforts whenever needed. Coordinated and co-financed through the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism, these resources are designed to help mitigate risks and enable a faster, more robust emergency response. Together, we act faster, stronger, and more effectively. ➡️ Learn more: https://europa.eu/!8hQrd6 © IGS Romania © Bulgaria Civil Protection
