💧How can we reduce our demand for energy, land, water, and other natural resources in the built environment? ⤵️ 🧱 Sufficiency in the built environment has the potential to reduce the need for new construction, cut resource use, lower operational carbon emissions, and lessen the environmental impact of the building sector. Under the 🇪🇺 NEB Facility 2025–2027, the topic “Sufficiency measures in the built environment” aims to test and validate approaches that map vacant or underused buildings, as well as sufficiency strategies that optimise, repurpose, or expand the use and functionality of space. 📌 Total estimated EU contribution: €8 million for up to 2 projects ⏰ Deadline for submissions: 12 November 2025 Apply here 👉 europa.eu/!ggmdnC Sufficiency can also help tackle social challenges like the shortage of affordable housing and reduce infrastructure costs for municipalities. #NewEuropeanBauhaus #HorizonEU

Meet Bouwurk: a bold, circular community house in Leeuwarden 🇳🇱 Designed by Overtreders W and built by local makers and volunteers, Bouwurk is a prototype for the future of construction: 🪵 modular, demountable, and made entirely from regional, reclaimed materials, from old glass and wood to silt from the Wadden Sea. What sets this project apart? Three rival construction companies joined forces to make it happen, proving that collaboration can build smarter, greener futures. 🌱 Until 24 August, you can experience Bouwurk’s rich programme of installations, performances, and workshops! 👉 Discover the story and the people behind it: https://lnkd.in/evBatzZC 📷 © Lucas Kemper #NewEuropeanBauhaus #Arcadia2025 Rijksoverheid EU Science, Research and Innovation

But what is the #NewEuropeanBauhaus all about? "It's about seeing today’s challenges as deeply interconnected and pushing forward for a transformation of the physical places we inhabit." Let’s hear it directly from Eva, one of our Policy Officers at the Joint Research Centre in Brussels! ⤵️

What if bio-fabricated materials are the game changer the construction sector needs? ⤵️ 🧑🔬Bio-fabricated materials have great potential as an alternative to conventional construction materials, but more exploration is needed. They can help us make the built environment more sustainable and circular, especially when combined with innovative technologies. 🧪 The topic “Bio-fabricated materials for sustainable and beautiful construction” under the 🇪🇺 NEB Facility 2025-2027, supports proposals to develop and test sustainable bio-fabricated construction materials, and assess their properties and environmental, social and economic impacts. 📌 Total estimated EU contribution: €10 million for up to 2 projects ⏰ Deadline for submissions: 12 November 2025 Apply here 👉 europa.eu/!vNVPX7 The selected projects will help understand key challenges like technical hurdles and high production costs, and move us closer to zero-waste construction and lower environmental impact. #NewEuropeanBauhaus #HorizonEU EU Science, Research and Innovation

This week we celebrated the official start of construction on our new building in Seville, which will be the first European Commission building with net-positive emissions. A huge thank you to all our guests, our Spanish partners, the architects that worked on the projects and all the people who made this event possible. The building we are starting to construct is a symbol of a more sustainable, more inclusive and more beautiful future, in line with the principles of the New European Bauhaus. In the building’s foundations, we will embed a time capsule. We chose a beautiful vase, handmade in Seville, and we asked all our guests, our researchers and their families to leave an object inside with their wish for the future. It will be an archive of the dreams, voices, and values that move us and that will shape the future to come. We are starting construction of the new site of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Seville, Spain. Its roof covered in solar panels will generate more energy than the building will consume, as well as providing shade for a public square. The dome shape of the building is inspired by Seville’s traditional architecture, and the construction will use locally sourced materials like limestone, wood and ceramics. The construction works are expected to last two years. Seville has hosted one of the sites of the Joint Research Centre since 1994. Over 400 of our researchers work there, providing science and data in support of innovation, economic modelling, fiscal policy, digitalisation and artificial intelligence. The new building, designed by BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group, is a symbol of the New European Bauhaus, the EU initiative that supports the creation of beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive places, products and ways of living.
