An average of 28 children have been killed each day since the start of the war in Gaza – the equivalent of an entire classroom, every day for nearly two years. "These children are not combatants,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell told the Security Council on Wednesday, briefing on the desperate situation facing Gaza’s one million children. "They do not start conflicts, and they are powerless to stop them. But they suffer greatly, and they wonder why the world has failed them.”

The Pact for the Future set out a bold plan to build a more just, resilient and sustainable world. On Thursday, UN member countries will meet to begin laying the foundation for how progress on the Pact will be reviewed. The Security Council is made up of 15 UN member countries, each with one vote. Five of those countries are permanent members that can block resolutions using the veto. The remaining 10 countries are elected to two-year terms. The Security Council’s primary responsibility is the maintenance of international peace and security, and its decisions are legally-binding for all 193 UN member countries. More than 14 million children worldwide have never received a single vaccine. Access to vaccines remains deeply unequal, with children living in conflict zones and humanitarian crises especially at risk. Children often remain un- or under-vaccinated due to a combination of factors, such as limited access to immunization services, disrupted supply, conflict and instability, or misinformation about vaccines.
