Today we met with the Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Oliver Varhelyi, to present actionable solutions for the biggest challenges facing our community and highlight the potential added value of European action in the rare disease field. 📈 The Strategic Importance of Rare Diseases Rare diseases are a powerful engine for innovation, with breakthroughs in areas like genomics, gene therapies, and bioinformatics often translating into advances for more common conditions. The Biotech Act, aligned with the European Life Sciences Strategy, is a key opportunity to strengthen Europe’s biotech ecosystem. To realise this potential, smarter, more inclusive clinical trials, particularly those that engage Eastern European centres and leverage European Reference Networks, are essential to realising this potential. 🤝 Addressing Inequalities in Access, Availability and Affordability Access to rare disease treatments remains deeply unequal. We proposed that Member States should use the new EU Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Regulation to deepen voluntary cooperation on economic evaluation methods, fostering greater alignment in how treatments are assessed and valued. At the same time, the proposed Critical Medicines Act offers opportunities for Member States and the Commission to launch collaborative procurement initiatives that close market gaps, strengthen bargaining power, and accelerate access to priority medicines and therapies, for example those for ultra-rare conditions. We thank the Commissioner for his time and look forward to a fruitful dialogue going forward. 📉 Pesticides reduction targets update! Member States show excellent progress when it comes to reducing the use and risk of chemical pesticides, as well as the use of the most hazardous ones. This is according to the annual evaluation of pesticides reduction targets, which was published today. 🎯 The non-binding EU target set for 2030 has been reached ahead of the deadline for the use and risk of chemical pesticides, which decreased by 58% in 2023. The use of more hazardous pesticides decreased by 27%, from the reference period of 2015-2017. We continue to support Member States in their work to reduce the risks and impacts of pesticides on human health and the environment. Through their National Action Plans, Member States are also encouraging farmers to apply the principles of integrated pest management, to reduce their reliance on the use of pesticides.
