Established in 1951, IOM is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners.
With 175 member states, a further 8 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. IOM is part of the United Nations system, as a related organization.
IOM supports migrants across the world, developing effective responses to the shifting dynamics of migration and, as such, is a key source of advice on migration policy and practice. The organization works in emergency situations, developing the resilience of all people on the move, and particularly those in situations of vulnerability, as well as building capacity within governments to manage all forms and impacts of mobility.
Since the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in 2018, IOM coordinates the secretariat of the United Nations Network on Migration (UNNM) which ensures effective, timely and coordinated UN system-wide support to Member States.
From 2022, the Sub-Regional Office for the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) is based in the UN City in Copenhagen, leading IOM’s liaison and coordination with strategic partners and donors.
In 2024, the office became a Country Office for Partnership and Advocacy (COPA) and a Country Office with Coordination Function (COCF), leading IOM’s liaison and coordination with strategic partners and donors in the Nordic Countries, reporting to IOM’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia in Vienna.
