Established in 1951, IOM is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. With 175 member states, a further 8 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. IOM is part of the United Nations system, as a related organization. IOM supports migrants across the world, developing effective responses to the shifting dynamics of migration and, as such, is a key source of advice on migration policy and practice. The organization works in emergency situations, developing the resilience of all people on the move, and particularly those in situations of vulnerability, as well as building capacity within governments to manage all forms and impacts of mobility. Since the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in 2018, IOM coordinates the secretariat of the United Nations Network on Migration (UNNM) which ensures effective, timely and coordinated UN system-wide support to Member States. From 2022, the Sub-Regional Office for the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) is based in the UN City in Copenhagen, leading IOM’s liaison and coordination with strategic partners and donors. In 2024, the office became a Country Office for Partnership and Advocacy (COPA) and a Country Office with Coordination Function (COCF), leading IOM’s liaison and coordination with strategic partners and donors in the Nordic Countries, reporting to IOM’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia in Vienna.

Last week, we welcomed at UN City Copenhagen a group of 55 students from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv 🏫 in #Ukraine who gained insights about IOM - UN Migration's work in supporting Ukraine's short and long term recovery, made possible thanks to 🤝 Udlændinge- og Integrationsministeriet, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs support among others. 📍 With the online participation of migration experts from IOM Moldova, IOM Poland and IOM Ukraine, IOM Denmark's resettlement team presented IOM's wide range of humanitarian and development programmes implemented in Ukraine and neighboring countries, focused on supporting #refugees, third-country nationals and vulnerable communities. With the support of IOM - UN Migration in #Moldova, 21 #refugees from #Ukraine departed for #Norway after receiving movement and pre-embarkation health assistance from the Migration and Health Team, and information on essential services available in Norway. “We hope to find stability and a safe life for our children in Norway. I am a bit nervous about this big change in our lives, but your support gives us confidence,” said Natalia, mother of 10 children, from Odesa. Since the start of the full-scale war, IOM Moldova’s Resettlement and Movement Management and Migration and Health Teams have assisted a total of 1,938 people in relocating to the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) Member States through the EU+ Air Transfer Programme, funded by the European Union. As part of IOM’s Norwegian Cultural Orientation Programme (NORCO), the ongoing Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) session in Türkiye provides refugees preparing for resettlement to Norway with dynamic and interactive learning activities that promote reflection on integration, cultural adaptation, and employment strategies. One of the key activities used during the session involves three glasses of water to explain three different models of cultural adaptation: assimilation, separation, and integration. To illustrate these concepts, sugar, oil, and orange juice are added to each glass, showing how individuals might fully blend into a new culture, remain separate from it, or find a balance between maintaining their identity and adapting to a new environment. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their personal experiences and how they should be adapting to life in Norway. Another activity addresses the challenge of entering the job market in a new country. Participants are invited to move around a table with an apple placed at the centre, symbolizing a job opportunity. The exercise simulates the competitive nature of the job market and leads to a group discussion on labour market dynamics, personal strategies for employment, and the potential obstacles and opportunities refugees may face when seeking work in Norway. These and other activities featured in the seminar serve as effective tools to strengthen refugees' understanding of Norwegian society while helping them build the skills and perspectives necessary to adapt to their life in Norway.
