As we continue to explore what #migration is about, today we share the thoughts of Gisèle N. Massamba, Resettlement Officer at Nav in Frogn, Norway. Leaving home is not just about crossing borders — it's about stepping into the unknown, learning to adapt, and slowly rebuilding a sense of belonging. 🌍

#Migration is about movement — of people, of hopes, of lives rebuilt across borders. It brings both opportunities and challenges, resilience and reinvention. It reshapes identities, bridges cultures, and fosters empathy. What does migration mean to you? 🌍

Last week, IOM Norway had an insightful exchange with the Oslo Chamber of Commerce / ICC Norway on the role of migrants in the workforce and the evolving needs of Norway’s private sector. The discussion highlighted the rising demand for diverse talent across Norway’s private sector and the valuable skills and perspectives migrants bring to the labor market. We look forward to continued dialogue and partnership with the Oslo Chamber of Commerce to support inclusive growth! 🤝

Another group of 21 Ukrainian refugees were safely relocated from #Moldova and are now ready to start a new chapter in #Norway with safety, stability, and hope. 🤝We are thankful to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its continued support to assist refugees affected by the war.
With the support of IOM - UN Migration in #Moldova, 21 #refugees from #Ukraine departed for #Norway after receiving movement and pre-embarkation health assistance from the Migration and Health Team, and information on essential services available in Norway. “We hope to find stability and a safe life for our children in Norway. I am a bit nervous about this big change in our lives, but your support gives us confidence,” said Natalia, mother of 10 children, from Odesa. Since the start of the full-scale war, IOM Moldova’s Resettlement and Movement Management and Migration and Health Teams have assisted a total of 1,938 people in relocating to the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) Member States through the EU+ Air Transfer Programme, funded by the European Union. As part of IOM’s Norwegian Cultural Orientation Programme (NORCO), the ongoing Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) session in Türkiye provides refugees preparing for resettlement to Norway with dynamic and interactive learning activities that promote reflection on integration, cultural adaptation, and employment strategies. One of the key activities used during the session involves three glasses of water to explain three different models of cultural adaptation: assimilation, separation, and integration. To illustrate these concepts, sugar, oil, and orange juice are added to each glass, showing how individuals might fully blend into a new culture, remain separate from it, or find a balance between maintaining their identity and adapting to a new environment. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their personal experiences and how they should be adapting to life in Norway. Another activity addresses the challenge of entering the job market in a new country. Participants are invited to move around a table with an apple placed at the centre, symbolizing a job opportunity. The exercise simulates the competitive nature of the job market and leads to a group discussion on labour market dynamics, personal strategies for employment, and the potential obstacles and opportunities refugees may face when seeking work in Norway. These and other activities featured in the seminar serve as effective tools to strengthen refugees' understanding of Norwegian society while helping them build the skills and perspectives necessary to adapt to their life in Norway. The NORCO programme is implemented by IOM and funded by The Directorate of Integration and Diversity (IMDi). IOM Türkiye

We’ve spent years trying to shift the narrative on migration. But maybe it’s not about glorifying or defending; maybe it’s just about saying what’s true. Migration isn’t a crisis. It’s not an exception. It’s part of life. A way people study, work, love, care and dream. Without being a hero or a scapegoat, migration simply exists and benefits us all. Let’s speak plainly about it. And let’s remember that the terms we use like “country of origin” or “host country” may sound technical, but they all point to the same word: home. The UN Network on Migration has created a short animation to help spark this reflection. Watch it, share it, use it. Because together, we can change the story and when we do, we change how people are seen, treated and protected.

"The International Forum for Migration Statistics (IFMS) is where policymakers and those who are producing migration statistics meet to discuss innovation and ways to work together." 📢 At #IFMS2025, IOM - UN Migration, OECD - OCDE and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs reaffirm the joint commitment to strengthening global migration data systems. Together with partners, we’re building a future where migration policies are shaped by truth—not myth. Since 2014, over 75,000 migrants have died or gone missing. Working to ensure that every statistic leads to life-saving, evidence-based policies is key to tackle misinformation and enable safer migration pathways. 🗞️ Read the full press release: bit.ly/4eBEywk 🤝 Hosted in collaboration with Malmö universitet and the Government of Sweden.
