Last month, the European Parliament took a crucial step towards protecting cats and dogs and ensuring full traceability across the EU. But the negotiations on this important legislation are not over yet. 🇪🇺🗣️ Today, the #trilogue negotiations between European Parliament, Council of the European Union and European Commission start - a dialogue that will ultimately decide the fate of millions of cats and dogs across the EU. Alongside our member organisations across all Member States, we are urging EU institutions to reaffirm and strengthen the commitment taken in June by the European Parliament, ultimately leaving no dog or cat behind. Follow us for updates on the progress of the negotiations. #AnimalWelfareEU #CatsAndDogs #ProtectAllDogs #ProtectAllCats

There is still time to take action for animals during transport! Join our mass mailing action to send a message to MEPs urging them to ensure animals are better protected during live transport! https://lnkd.in/eA8cqjpR MEPs are working on updating the EU’s live animal transport laws – legislation which affects the welfare of billions of animals per year. Right now, they are discussing which updates should make it into the final proposal, which will be put to a vote towards the end of 2025. The outcome will determine which changes will become the official EP position. Over 3,000 amendments were submitted. Some of these changes would be catastrophic if they made it into the final file. We must not let them become law! Please, join our action and stand up for these innocent animals. #AnimalWelfareEU #StopTheTrucks #BanLiveExport #LiveAnimalTransport #ActforAnimals #TakeAction

Next step in the #FurFreeEurope #EuropeanCitizensInitiative process! 👉 On Friday 4 July, the European Commission opened the call for evidence, which allows stakeholders to submit evidence or viewpoints for a period of four weeks. ✍️ In addition to the call for evidence, the Commission is awaiting an opinion from European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to inform their final decision. It's expected to be released during July. 📢 Stakeholders have until 1 August to submit feedback. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dV9HpjEf

Did you know that the EU's biggest farming policy can also affect animal welfare issues beyond farming, like #bullfighting? Certain financing streams of the Common Agricultural Policy can technically go towards supporting these kinds of cruel practices. It's vital this stops! Many of our members, including CAS International (Comité Anti Stierenvechten) and AnimaNaturalis Internacional, have been campaigning against bullfighting for years, due to its unethical nature and the enormous distress it causes to bulls... all for human "entertainment". No policy should be permitted to support it, no matter how indirectly. Instead, policy-makers should look at where #AnimalWelfare measures can be improved in the Common Agricultural Policy, both in its application across the EU and at Member State level. IMPORTANT WOLF UPDATE! As of today, the wolf will lose its 'strictly protected' status in the EU and become just 'protected.' This means that there is now greater flexibility for hunting wolves. BUT not all is lost, as Member States can still decide to keep this keystone species strictly protected. Our Wild Animals Programme Officer, Léa Badoz, explains how in this video. Portugal has already made its decision and will keep the wolves ''strictly protected''. Thank you, Portugal, we hope to see more Member States following your lead. The science on this is clear: culling wolves is not the solution, as it has been proven to be ineffective. Instead, governments should prioritise investing in preventive measures, such as guard dogs and electric fences, in order to protect farmers and their livestock from attacks. Please share this video and check what your local organisations are doing at the national level to ensure wolves remain protected.

What happens when science meets advocacy? Lessons from the #PHAIR2025 conference. 💡 Last week, Eurogroup for Animals participated for the first time in the Animal Advocacy Conference organised by the PHAIR society (https://phairsociety.org/) in Edinburgh. Our Senior Veterinary Adviser, Elena N., presented our work to an audience of fellow #animal #advocates and #scientists, all striving to build a kinder world where animals are truly respected and treated as #sentient beings and where animal products no longer occupy a central place in our diets. Elena's presentation focused on the role of direct scientific #advocacy for #animalwelfare. Scientists from many disciplines (climate science, conservation, human medicine) have already activated themselves for the planet and human health. Lately, #veterinarians and animal welfare scientists have increasingly engaged with the media and policymakers. They are making an important contribution towards shifting public perceptions, using their research and expertise to drive positive change for animals. Activating academia means overcoming the barrier imposed by “impartiality” and acknowledging that academics can have a direct role to play in driving positive change for animals. Her presentation finished with an appeal to the audience to contribute to the call for evidence of the European Commission ahead of the planned revision of #EU #legislation. The time to make a difference with scientific evidence is now (until July 16th)! https://lnkd.in/dzQxQfjH We are very grateful to the organisers of #PHAIR2025 Kristof Dhont, PhD, Matti Wilks, Steve Loughnan, for having us as speakers at this conference, and to all the wonderful people we met who are working tirelessly to build a better world for animals and humans. We will treasure the new connections made and the inspiring conversations, and continue to fight to make science more visible in the #policymaking arena. To this year’s Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome, 40+ organisations and 70 experts of the Build Ukraine Back Better group prepared a Roadmap for the Sustainable Recovery of Ukraine: https://lnkd.in/dZaUj5C4 It aims to outline a list of priority reforms, policies, and structural changes that need to be implemented over the next few years to ensure environmentally sustainable and resilient recovery in six key sectors: agriculture, buildings, economy, energy, environment and transport. Eurogroup for Animals welcomes a recognition of the #animalwelfare implementation on the ground in #Ukraine as a prerequisite for a truly sustainable livestock sector recovery and future development. The Roadmap is available in English and Ukrainian. Linked in the comments. #RebuildUkraineGreen #BuildUkraineBackBetter #ЗеленеВідновленняУкраїни #SustainableRecoveryUA Valentyna Vozna Anna Ackermann
