Seven years ago today, I got my dream job at World Animal Protection. Working on behalf of animals is my passion and my purpose, and I'm beyond lucky to work with the most amazing colleagues across the globe. I'm also lucky, really lucky, to travel for work, including seeing these beauties last year in Thailand. There is nothing like seeing elephants living their best lives, away from riding and washing, to cement your purpose. The wins in animal welfare don't come as often as they should, but I will never stop advocating for animals. Remember: If you can ride, wash, hold, take a selfie with, or watch a wild animal perform, there is cruelty involved and you should stay away. Interested in our work? Videos like this are so important for shifting public awareness. Seeing whales and dolphins in their natural ocean home is an unforgettable experience; one that brings their intelligence, joy and freedom into clear focus. In contrast, life in captivity strips them of everything that makes them who they are. It is hard to believe it has already been a year since stepping into the role of CEO of World Animal Protection. So much has happened, and I have learned a great deal. Over the past 12 months, I have met with policymakers, ambassadors, potential partners and passionate advocates from all over the world, who all care deeply about animals and the future we share with them. One moment that really stayed with me was walking through a food forest in the Netherlands. At first it looked wild and chaotic, but the more I observed, I could see how everything had its place. Each plant, bird and animal was part of something that worked in balance. Different strengths, different perspectives, all contributing to something bigger. Just like us. The world is shifting in so many ways. It can feel uncertain, even overwhelming at times. But I believe there is still hope. More than that, I believe we can be the hope. And that is what drives me. I am proud of what we have achieved this past year, and incredibly grateful to the people I get to work alongside. Thank you for everything so far. I am excited about what comes next.

Ten years ago, the death of Cecil the lion made international headlines. Lured out of a protected area and fatally wounded by a trophy hunter who paid US$50,000 for the kill, Cecil suffered for hours before dying. His death became a symbol of the cruelty and injustice of trophy hunting and sparked a global outcry. A decade on, commercial lion breeding, canned hunting and the bone trade still continue in South Africa. However, attitudes are shifting. New research shows more than 85% of community members living near Kruger National Park South Africa now support a lion levy, a small fee added to wildlife tourism that would help protect lions in the wild and support local communities. This kind of public backing reflects a growing desire, both locally and globally, to move away from exploitation and towards ethical, sustainable alternatives. Cecil’s legacy lives on in the continued movement to protect wild animals.

A game-changing victory for dolphins and a powerful step towards ending the use of wild animals for entertainment. Mexico has passed new legislation to ban dolphin shows, entertainment, captive breeding, and any other activity not related to conservation. This follows years of campaigning by scientists, activists, and animal welfare organisations who have highlighted the immense suffering of captive dolphins. We know how much dolphins suffer in captivity. This decision is a direct response to growing public concern and scientific consensus on the urgent need to end the exploitation of marine mammals for profit. This is a significant step forward, and a signal to the rest of the world. Let this be the last generation of dolphins held captive for entertainment.

One week ago, a brutal hunt in the Faroe Islands left at least 246 pilot whales dead. The grindadráp is defended by some as cultural tradition, but the scale, suffering and global opposition paint a different picture. This is not subsistence. It is a spectacle of cruelty that has no place in the present day. Pilot whales are highly intelligent, deeply social animals. Their family bonds are so strong that pod members often refuse to abandon each other, even in the face of danger. That loyalty is part of what makes these hunts so devastating: entire families are wiped out in one afternoon. There is nothing humane about this.
