Volunteering is at the core of everything we do, and in Mozambique, Nelma and Carmirene are making a profound impact at a community level. Through their work, they’re empowering young girls and women to transform their lives through education and knowledge sharing. For Nelma and Carmirene, education isn’t just confined to the classroom, it’s about meeting people where they are, providing the right tools, and challenging harmful societal norms. Read more about their experience as VSO volunteers in our latest blog post. #WeVolunteerFor #SDGs #GlobalGoals #Education #Volunteering #Volunteerism

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Mayor of #Bugesera District, Richard Mutabazi, to the VSO Rwanda office for a courtesy visit. The conversation focused on strengthening our existing #partnership and exploring new opportunities for future collaboration in areas that matter most to communities’ #youthCivicEngagement, #education and #InclusiveDevelopment. In a special moment during the visit, Mayor Mutabazi presented VSO Rwanda with a Certificate of Appreciation, recognizing the meaningful partnership and the shared efforts in driving inclusive and sustainable development in Bugesera District. At VSO Rwanda, we believe in the power of working together with local government to create sustainable change. We are grateful for the continued support and shared vision from Bugesera District leadership. #VolunteeringForDevelopment #YouthEgagement

Around the world, conflict is devasting people’s lives including on the Kenya-Ethiopia border. This area is mired by disputes, including tensions over access to water and grazing land for cattle, caused by persistent droughts and famine. However, VSO volunteers have helped bring communities together to build stronger, more cohesive societies and lasting peace. Watch our video which spotlights the story of Galgalo and his family who are bearing the brunt of conflict and climate change and discover how you're helping them feel no longer powerless. Every day on Nairobi's dump sites, women risk their lives just to be able to feed their children. VSO volunteers are working closely to ensure that things change for the better — providing training, safety equipment, and a bridge between waste pickers and buyback centres to ensure a fair price is paid for what waste has been collected. In this article, we meet Beth. A waste picker who has been able to double her income, received protective clothing to work safely, and is now building a brighter future for herself and her family. Read her story in our latest piece below and share with your network! #WeVolunteerFor #SDGs #GlobalGoals

"From my experience, the most enduring impact of VSO isn’t just on the communities but also on the individuals involved — the teams of teacher trainers, staff, and volunteers themselves." In our latest feature, we sit down and hear about the remarkable journey of Anna Robinson, a passionate British volunteer and retired educator whose VSO placement took her to the heart of Nepal in 1985. We explore Anna's captivating stories from her time across Nepal, and why three decades on, her connection to the country and its people remains stronger than ever before. #WeVolunteerFor #SDGs #GlobalGoals #InternationalDevelopment

🌍 Today, on International Day of the Midwife #IDM2025, we honour the unwavering dedication of midwives who stand as pillars of strength in every crisis. From conflict zones to climate-affected areas, midwives are often the first—and sometimes the only—health professionals accessible to women and newborns. They provide essential care, support, and hope, even when resources are scarce and challenges persist. At VSO, we've witnessed first hand the resilience and impact of midwives across our programmes. During the recent Regional Health Promotion Conference 2025 #RHPC2025, co-hosted with Ministry of Health, Kenya Health Promotion-Kenya, the indispensable role of midwives in crisis preparedness and response was emphasized. Discussions centred on integrating midwifery services into health systems to ensure that, even in the most challenging times, #nooneisleftbehind. Despite their critical contributions, midwives often remain under-recognized and under-resourced. It's time to make a radical change and appreciate their work. 👉 Let's advocate for: ⭐ Increased investment in midwifery education and resources. ⭐ Inclusion of midwives in health policy and crisis response planning. ⭐ Protection and support for midwives working in high-risk environments. By empowering midwives, we strengthen communities and build more resilient health systems. #IDM2025 #HealthforAll #UHC #RHPC2025 #Intersectionality #SDG3 Coalition for Women's Health in Africa (COWHA) International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office

Fantastic to see VSO Digital Ambassador Awais Nadar partnering with his local university to deliver a session on the Global Volunteering Standards, a framework which brings together years of expertise, existing good practices, and tested methodologies that maximise impact. The Global Volunteering Standards supports volunteer-involving organisations to better design, implement, and evaluate their volunteer programmes and ensure the safety of both their volunteers and the communities they serve. Here at VSO, we have also been working with governments around the world to try to embed these standards, training government officials in ministries on the practicalities of what good volunteer management looks like in practice. Every year, over one billion people around the world are estimated to volunteer their time, and through this work, we can support organisations to ensure that volunteers are appropriately selected, prepared, and supported. #WeVolunteerFor #SDGs #GlobalGoals #Volunteering
Truly honored to deliver a session on Global Volunteering Standards (GVS) at the University Of Central Punjab (UCP), in collaboration with the Volunteers in Service (VIS) Department. In this session, we explored the 4 key pillars of GVS that ensure ethical and effective volunteer practices: 1. Volunteer Engagement & Management 2. Safety & Well-being 3. Ethical Standards & Inclusion 4. Impact Measurement & Reporting This initiative is part of the ACTIVE project, implemented by the Bargad Society of Human Resources in collaboration with VSO Pakistan. Together, we are working to empower youth across Pakistan by promoting inclusive, safe, and impactful volunteerism rooted in global standards. A huge thank you to UCP’s passionate students and the VIS team for the warm welcome and active participation. Special thanks to Ms. Rabia Dar and Mr. Ahmed Zafar for their kind facilitation and support throughout the session. We look forward to your continued support and active participation in our efforts to build a more inclusive and empowered society through volunteerism! ✨ #WeVolunteerFor #GVS #Bargad VSO
