We give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm in the US & around the world

About us

Save the Children is the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world. Recognized for our commitment to accountability, innovation and collaboration, our work takes us into the heart of communities, where we help children and families help themselves. We work with other organizations, governments, non-profits and a variety of local partners while maintaining our own independence without political agenda or religious orientation. When disaster strikes around the world, Save the Children is there to save lives with food, medical care and education and remains to help communities rebuild through long-term recovery programs. As quickly and as effectively as Save the Children responds to tsunamis and civil conflict, it works to resolve the ongoing struggles children face every day — poverty, hunger, illiteracy and disease — and replaces them with hope for the future.

  • 🌍In the age of AI, empowering youth with future-ready skills is more important than ever. Through our Skills to Succeed program, we’re helping youth across eight countries step up to the future of work with critical skills in digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and career readiness. Together, we’re bridging the digital divide and opening pathways to brighter futures. Today, on the 10th anniversary of World Youth Skills Day, we’re proud to kick-off the Leaders of Change Youth Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia —a transformative gathering of youth representatives, private sector leaders, nonprofits, academic institutions and government partners. 💡From hands-on workshops to inspiring mentorship sessions, we’re focused on preparing young people to lead in the era of digital transformation, while celebrating their leadership, innovation and resilience. Let’s keep investing in youth—because when young people succeed, we all succeed 💪 #WorldYouthSkillsDay #SkillsToSucceed

  • 🎉 Kicking off our new Team Spotlight series with an inspiring changemaker! Save the Children has a 106-year legacy and one remarkable team member has been part of our journey for half a century —50 years of global humanitarian service. We’re honored to celebrate Gary Shaye, whose unwavering commitment has helped create a lasting impact for children around the world 👏 Over the years, Gary has worn many hats at Save the Children: 🧢 Intern and Field Officer 🚑 Emergency Response Team 🌎 Country Director in Nepal, Haiti, Bolivia, and Dominican Republic 🌐 Regional Director for Latin America 📈 Deputy VP of International Programs 🤝 Now, Lead Advisor & Program Ambassador, Partnerships & Philanthropy    “I would describe my work as building relationships and building teams. I try to do this by listening to people and asking a lot of questions,” Gary shares. “Relationships require continuity, both in communities but of course with staff. If our teams and I work effectively, staff will stay longer and the communities we work with will be more likely to have healthy and life-changing outcomes.” So what keeps someone committed to the same mission and organization for five decades? Gary credits the opportunity to live abroad, connect with people from diverse backgrounds, and learn from them. He’s also grateful for supportive supervisors and proud of raising a globally minded family 👨👩👧👦 His four children speak Spanish and call several countries home. A memory close to his heart? Gary witnessed how Save the Children’s rapid response and cholera treatment centers saved countless lives during a cholera outbreak in Haiti. Here’s to Gary —a true Changemaker in Action— and to all the incredible people behind our purpose ✨ Stay tuned for more team spotlights! Find your passion, bring your purpose. • 🃏 Flexible funding: the ace up humanitarians’ sleeves? In today’s uncertain foreign aid landscape, flexible funding is no longer a luxury. It’s a lifeline. When disasters strike or conflicts escalate, unrestricted support allows us to: ⚡Deploy rapidly —like when we delivered meals to families in Türkiye and Syria within 12hrs of the earthquakes. 🔄 Adapt quickly —because every crisis evolves in unexpected ways. 🛡️ Sustain life-saving programs —even when government funding falls short or new emergencies arise. Thanks to the flexible support of partners like Accenture, Charles Monat Associates, TOMS, Viatris, Sompo and others —together, we’re redefining what rapid, resilient humanitarian response looks like. While restricted funding addresses known needs, flexible funding empowers us to meet the needs no one saw coming. Let’s keep redefining what’s possible✨ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gHnpX8YS

  • 🚨 The Administration is holding back nearly $7 billion in education funding —including critical support for afterschool and summer programs. This will create unnecessary disruptions for schools, families and, most importantly, students. Together with our advocacy arm, Save the Children Action Network (SCAN), we’re urging the Administration to release these education dollars without delay. "Congress approved these funds with strong bipartisan support. It's time for the Administration to follow through by providing these funds to the states," said Christy Gleason, Executive Director of SCAN. These grants represent a longstanding national commitment to supporting kids’ learning and development. Communities, schools, families, and ultimately children, rely on these programs to thrive and succeed. "This funding has been essential in helping children who are falling behind academically, particularly in rural and low-income communities where fewer opportunities exist," added Betsy Zorio, Vice President of U.S. Programs at Save the Children. • Six months ago, wildfires tore through Los Angeles—destroying homes, schools and childcare centers, including the one Esperanza had built from the ground up.   But now, she has proudly rebuilt and reopened her center 🏫 —a safe, welcoming space for kids—thanks to support from Save the Children and the Child Care Alliance of Los Angeles.   We’re helping 100 childcare providers like Esperanza rebuild what was lost. Because when disaster strikes, we stay for as long as it takes to help families recover and give children a chance to heal, grow and thrive 🫶

It’s time to retire the term “foreign assistance.”   It’s also time for the development and humanitarian sector to confront a hard truth: we’re not structured for the world we now face. Dashboards chart the steepest retreat in development finance in recent times.   Beneath every downward trend lies a human story of survival. So, how do we refocus on what truly matters—people, families, children?   I believe this moment of disruption is also an opportunity—one that we cannot afford to waste. Over a century ago, Save the Children US founder Eglantyne Jebb said: “Every generation of children offers mankind the possibility of rebuilding his ruin of a world.”    In the latest Stanford Social Innovation Review article —the fourth in a series by global development leaders— I joined T. Alexander Puutio to explore how the sector can move forward in the face of government pullbacks. We also share five actionable ideas to get us started.   Read the full story: 👉 https://lnkd.in/e-XQ9RyH

  • Play is a language that every child speaks—no matter where they’re from. But what does play look like around the world? 🌍 As we wrap up June and mark the #InternationalDayofPlay, we invite you to swipe through and take a peek at how children play —from toy boats crafted from leftover canoe wood, to traditional board games and even handmade guitars.  Whether it’s a playground, a backyard, or the rubble left behind by crisis, children have an incredible ability to transform ordinary spaces into joyful adventures. At Save the Children, we believe every child deserves a safe space to play. Yet, 1 in 5 children globally say there are no safe places for them to play. “Amid increasing conflict and climate related disasters in the world, children caught in crisis consistently tell us how important play is to their wellbeing, for a sense of normalcy –and for hope for a better future,” explains James Cox, Head of Advocacy and Policy Education at Save the Children International.
