  • We’re excited to share our latest research report, which explores the challenges and opportunities for effective farmed animal advocacy in Nigeria — a key player in African agriculture 🇳🇬 Based on desk research, expert interviews, and an in-depth prioritisation process, the report highlights four top recommendations for advocates in Nigeria: 1️⃣ Public radio campaigns – Using mass media to raise awareness about animal welfare among consumers and farmers. 2️⃣ Regulating stocking densities – Introducing legal limits on animal stocking density to curb extreme overcrowding in industrial farms and support fairer conditions for small-scale producers 3️⃣ Introducing an animal welfare act – A foundational law to promote humane treatment of farmed animals and lay the groundwork for future legal reforms. 4️⃣ Direct outreach to intensive producers – To encourage welfare improvements by aligning them with productivity gains. Participants from our latest cohort are already acting on these findings: Daniel Ayinde & Isaac Fasipe,GAS are addressing the expansion of JBS into Nigeria to mitigate the worst effects of these developments. Two other alumni are exploring plans to develop radio campaigns targeting egg suppliers and producers to go cage-free. This is our first country-specific report, with one on Ethiopia currently in the pipeline. Read the summary here: https://lnkd.in/ddFtddfF Read our full report here: https://lnkd.in/d5AbYGi3

  • We enjoyed meeting several of our alumni in person for the first time at EAG London this past weekend! It was great to see increased representation from across Africa at these conferences. Connecting with advocates from our programme and seeing their continued interest and involvement in the animal welfare movement was a valuable reminder of the importance of supporting locally grounded work. ❓ The next global food crisis? Unchecked factory farming in Africa demands urgent research attention. Big thanks to Faunalytics for sharing our report examining the interconnected political, economic, sociocultural, environmental, and public health dimensions of factory farming's rise in Sub-Saharan Africa. The report identifies Nigeria, Ghana, and Ethiopia as priority countries, offering a detailed analysis and strategic pathways, including: ➖ The urgent need for research into the impacts of factory farming on environmental health, public well-being, and traditional farming systems ➖ Critical opportunities to promote sustainable and ethical agricultural practices (e.g. agroecological farming systems, plant-based diets) ➖ Recommendations to develop robust food production standards, restrict foreign ownership in agriculture, and invest into alternative proteins 3 min read: https://lnkd.in/djXHbq6a Abby Couture Elise Hankins Chris Bryant 🔸 Lynn Tan Moritz Stumpe Animal Advocacy Africa Effective Altruism Alternative Proteins Association

🇪🇬 We are pleased to announce our latest research report: Farmed Animal Advocacy in Egypt! 🙏🏼 This report was written in collaboration with Ethical Seafood Research, which helped with the initial scoping with the help of Melinda Jackson from New York University. We would like to express our immense gratitude to Nayyira ElGohary for all her hard work on this report as part of the Ambitious Impact (AIM) internship program. 🌍 We are very excited to continue exploring the challenges and opportunities in African countries. Egypt is our fourth installment covering countries in Africa, after our reports on Zimbabwe, Uganda and Ghana. We plan to continue supporting African animal advocates in their mission to help farmed animals. https://lnkd.in/de-kkRYw #Egypt #animalwelfare #Africa #animals #effectivealtruism #animaladvocacy
