As a wāhine Māori, māmā of three, and someone building both kaupapa-driven mahi and a future-focused business, I’ve stopped chasing “perfect balance” and instead focus on rhythm, boundaries, and purpose. I plan around my whānau first—school pick-ups, kai (food) prep, quiet moments—and then build my freelance or thought leadership work in blocks that honour those anchors. I use tools like Google Calendar, voice notes, and reflective journaling to track not just deadlines, but how I feel about the mahi (work). When my creativity flows and my tamariki (children) are laughing nearby, I know I’m in the right place, even if the to-do list isn’t finished. That’s balance, for me.

Say No Without the Guilt.... Saying “no” used to feel like failure—until I realized every “yes” costs something. Sometimes it’s sleep. Sometimes it’s a weekend. I now ask: “Will future me thank me for this?” That question alone saved me from overbooking so many times.

Honor and create a diverse schedule. Include things that will reset and balance you (meditation, gym, reading, cleaning/ organizing, hiking, and etc), work things, creative outlets, and connection time with humans (family, friends, and spouse).

Use your calendar with intention. Block time for creative work, admin, calls, and recovery. Treat those blocks like real appointments. When your time is structured, your mind can be free to focus without constant overwhelm.

The To-do list ✅ and the task tracker help me a lot when working for myself. As creators, we always have deadlines and goals. I started tracking my work hours and setting my time more appropriately. ☕️ In addition, my personal life hack is that I add personal files and tasks to the tracker (including workouts, daily walks, working with social networks, meeting friends). It helps me to allocate time to work and see this very balance that we are all looking for. 🫆 And don't think that it will put pressure on you. Try it and just pay attention to your time allocation over the course of a couple of weeks – I promise this will help you as a creator understand more about your process.

Some tasks can be finished within the 25-minute Pomodoro interval, while some might require longer intervals (for me, it's content writing: 25-minute time blocks actually distract me in the process, while 45-60-minute ones work well). Don't hesitate to experiment, be flexible, and remain mindful of your own energy here.

10 minutes in the garden or greenhouse can work wonders. Repotting a couple of plants, or some light pruning or weeding, can give you an immediate sense of achievement as well as reminding you that small actions contribute to longer-term growth - I find that very refreshing when the desk work doesn't seem to be making much progress.

I recommend to manage your weekly timeline as I am doing it Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 4 hours a day - Creating & editing Content & Scheduling it through content schedule apps. Remaining time for Personal & Family work. Wednesday - Research on new content for 2 hours - 3 slots taking breaks in between for personal and family works Saturday - Discuss next week plans with Freelancers/agencies/Community for 4 hours, rest for personal requirements. Sunday - Time to relax with Family & Socials. Follow this for 4 weeks and you will be all set to rock.
