What an incredible start to the 10th Annual Meeting of the New Development Bank! We were honoured to welcome H.E. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, to the annual gathering of NDB's Board of Governors. In his inspiring speech, President Lula celebrated NDB’s tenth anniversary and reflected on its origins. He emphasised, “The decision to create NDB was a milestone in the joint action of emerging countries. It stems from a shared desire to overcome the deep financing gap for sustainable development.” President Dilma Rousseff welcomed President Lula and other esteemed guests and said, “Emerging markets and developing countries deserve institutions that understand their challenges, respect their choices and support their ambitions. BRICS Leaders reaffirmed strong support for NDB in the Rio de Janeiro Declaration adopted on July 6, 2025, at the BRICS Summit. "As the New Development Bank is set to embark on its second golden decade of high-quality development, we recognize and support its growing role as a robust and strategic agent of development and modernization in the Global South." They highlighted the Bank’s expanding role in mobilising resources, promoting sustainable projects, advancing local currency financing and enhancing governance. The declaration also emphasised the importance of broadening NDB's membership and applauded President Dilma Rousseff’s leadership. NDB and State Grid Brazil Holding signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the sidelines of the 10th #NDBAnnualMeeting with the aim of enhancing electricity transmission capacity in Brazil, to meet the immediate needs of the nation’s power sector. This initiative will enhance grid reliability, support renewable energy growth and create over 10,000 jobs across key regions. NDB is considering financing the Project in Chinese renminbi, with an estimated amount of RMB 2,150 million (approximately USD 300 million). "When signed, this will be our second cross-border RMB-denominated loan, which will leverage Brazil’s clean energy potential to address urgent electricity demands and benefit millions of people while generating new jobs,” said H.E.
