We had the pleasure of co-hosting a webinar together with the World Resources Forum in the run-up of their conference in September. Hear directly from our members on how IRMA drives value for all of them, from improved operational practices, to increased confidence in sourcing, and greater accountability across the supply chain. The answer to global demand for more socially and environmentally responsible mining.
About us
The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) is a coalition of nongovernment organizations, mining companies, businesses purchasing minerals and metals for resale in other products, affected communities, and trade unions. IRMA's vision is that of a world in which the mining industry is respectful of the human rights and the aspirations of affected communities; provides safe, healthy and respectful workplaces; avoids or minimizes harm to the environment; and leaves positive legacies. Our mission is to establish a multi-stakeholder and independently-verified responsible mining assurance system that improves social and environmental performance and creates value for the mine sites which lead. The Standard for Responsible Mining launched in June 2018 is a precedent-setting global certification program for industrial-scale mine sites. With growing awareness and demand for ecologically and socially-responsible products jewelers, electronics businesses and others have sought assurances that the minerals they purchase are mined responsibly. The Standard for Responsible Mining’s best practice requirements for mining include elements such as health and safety for workers, human rights, community engagement, pollution control, mining in conflict-affected areas, rights of indigenous peoples, transparency in revenue payments from companies to governments, and land reclamation once mining is done.

From the beginning, trade unions and worker representatives have played a key role in shaping the IRMA Standard ensuring that workers’ rights, health, and safety remain at the core of our mission. Here’s how IRMA supports labour in mining: ✅ Robust Labour Standards IRMA integrates internationally recognized labour protections, including ILO conventions and recommendations. 🔍 Independent Verification for Accountability Third-party audits assess how mine sites protect labour rights. Public audit reports give workers and unions credible information to drive improvements including through collective agreements. 🗣️ Worker Voice in Practice Auditors engage directly with workers and unions, not just management, to ensure their voices are heard and reflected in audit findings. Today Anglo American's Los Bronces copper operations in Chile 🇨🇱 begins its independent, third-party assessment against the IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining. The assessment 🔍 will be conducted by ERM CVS, an IRMA-approved independent audit firm, including a desk review, and an onsite audit. When the audit is complete a final report will be published that assigns an IRMA Achievement level, explaining how and why the audit firm scored the operation against each of the 400+ requirements of the IRMA Standard. Community members, public officials, workers, or other interested stakeholders are invited to submit comments 🗣️ regarding how the mine site is managing environmental impacts; how the mine supports their workforce; or how the mine impacts the community, positively or negatively. Last month, IRMA’s Deputy Director Rebecca Burton spoke at a high level panel organized by the MEF Energy Forum/ZIP Institute in Skopje, Macedonia on “Critical Raw Materials and New Dependences – The Way Forward”. In her remarks Rebecca discussed: ⚖️ How in a rapidly changing regulatory environment, we need to look where there are still levers we can pull to keep the ambition high. 🔋 How the buyers of mined materials -- which includes renewable energy companies and government procurement for renewables -- can signal the value of high-bar practices at mine sites. Energy companies like SSE Renewables and Ørsted are already doing so at IRMA. 📌 How focusing on value and impact at a local level is what will make this transition just. At IRMA we're seeing this already for mines sites who are using the standard to improve day-by-day, for communities who are benefitting directly from more transparency, and for workers whose voices are represented at the global and local levels in IRMA's system. The IRMA Standard was created by and for all stakeholders, including mining affected communities. Here are three ways IRMA benefits affected communities: 📖 IRMA helps communities access information about how a mine is performing, thanks to the robustness of the standard and transparency of the process and outcomes. 🗣️ IRMA audits put community voices front and center. Auditors are required to reach out and invite community representatives and leaders to tell them how the mine is performing. 🏛️ IRMA is a tool to advocate for stronger mining laws. As demand for critical minerals grows, so do expectations to ensure these resources are developed and extracted responsibly. But are responsible mining requirements enabling meaningful progress or creating new barriers? 🗣️ IRMA’s Regional Lead for Africa, Davidzo Muchawaya, will join a panel of experts to explore how responsible mining expectations are shaping investment and operational decisions across Sub-Saharan Africa. Thanks to the Critical Minerals Africa Group for the invitation. Link to register to the webinar in the first comment ⬇️

ERM CVS, an IRMA-approved independent audit firm, will conduct a follow-up onsite assessment of the Sibanye-Stillwater Rustenburg complex from 4-8 Aug. The audit process began in Nov 2024, this visit will have a special focus on Kroondal. This onsite visit will gather direct feedback from stakeholders, including community members, mine workers, and public officials. Remote participation is welcome as well. ERM CVS will consider all input, on any part of the Rustenburg complex, as it measures its performance against the IRMA Standard for #ResponsibleMining. Indonesia holds nearly half of the world’s nickel reserves, an essential commodity in the transition to clean energy. However, behind the green energy narrative, the expansion of nickel mining is increasingly threatening protected forests, Indigenous lands, and local communities living spaces. So, is the energy transition truly just? Or is it merely a shift from one crisis to another? All of these issues will be thoroughly discussed in the upcoming CERAH Insight Talk, which will explore the theme: "The Nickel and Energy Transition Dilemma: Can ESG Standards Protect Community Rights and Living Spaces” 🗓️ Monday, June 30, 2025 ⏰ 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (WIB) 📍 Zoom & YouTube Indonesia Cerah Don’t miss it, register now at bit.ly/RegistrasiCITJuni #IndonesiaCerah #EnergyTransition #JustEnergyTransition #RenewableEnergy #Nickel
