As part of London Climate Action Week, Lord John Browne, Chairman and Co-Founder of BeyondNetZero, joined the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme to discuss the evolving role of energy companies as energy demand soars, the imperative for electricity market reform, and where private capital can drive the most impact in accelerating the energy transition. Lord Browne underscored that while traditional oil and gas producers play a role in decarbonization - particularly through technologies like carbon capture - the primary drivers of clean energy investment are utility companies, infrastructure funds, and private investors. He also emphasized that systemic change begins with efficiency: better data, smarter analytics, and the deployment of AI are unlocking measurable gains in energy use and emissions reduction. Climate technologies that enable and optimize the decarbonization of the global economy need scale to support the acceleration of this transition. Through General Atlantic’s BeyondNetZero fund, a climate growth equity strategy, we believe targeted innovation and pragmatic investment are essential to deliver real-world climate impact by accelerating proven technologies through large scale deployment.
