The main points in my piece: → More than 64,000 people in tech have already faced layoffs due to AI. → But the companies rushing to cut their people now will regret it later. → And that's because AI doesn't think of innovative, market-leading ideas. Humans do! So my advice to companies? A staggering 40% of workers juggle two jobs, according to 2023 research by Paychex. Gen Z were the most prolific “polyworkers” with 93% of the youngest generation of workers splitting their time between multiple employers. Lawyers say it’s totally legal, but be warned: Just as there is no outright federal law preventing workers from holding down multiple gigs, there’s no law protecting that right either. How do you make a hard decision? For Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, it’s all about thinking of your future self. “I would say to a young person, you can choose a life of ease and comfort or you can choose a life of service and adventure,” Bezos said at a 2020 fireside chat event in Mumbai.  “We are reestablishing our in-office culture because we do our best work when we’re together." Starbucks is requiring some remote workers to return to its headquarters and increasing the number of days that corporate employees are required to work in an office.⁠ ⁠ In a letter to employees posted on Monday, Starbucks Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol said corporate employees would need to be in the office four days a week starting in early October instead of three days a week.⁠ ⁠ The Seattle-based company said that all corporate “people leaders” must be based in either Seattle or Toronto within 12 months. Jeff Bezos’ trajectory from a rented Bellevue garage to the helm of a $2.4 trillion enterprise is now business legend. In the summer of 1994, Jeff Bezos left a fledgling Wall Street career and moved to Bellevue, Washington, with a vision: to build an online bookstore that could one day sell everything. The first headquarters of Amazon was a modest rented house, and he and his then-wife, MacKenzie, worked side by side, packing books and driving them to the post office. The garage, with its concrete floor and humming servers, became the birthplace of what would soon be known as “the everything store.” It also gave birth to Bezos’ mentality as Amazon founder, one that he would ingrain some day in his much larger company as “Day 1,” as in, every day of your job should be tackled as if the company was one day old and you were still in the garage. President Donald Trump says he has finally found a way to achieve his goal of removing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, accusing him of mismanaging the U.S. central bank’s $2.5 billion renovation project. The push comes after a monthslong campaign by Trump to try to rid himself of the politically independent central banker, who has resisted the president’s calls to slash interest rates out of concerns about the administration’s tariffs sparking higher levels of inflation. The president indicated Tuesday that Powell’s handling of an extensive renovation project on two Fed buildings in Washington could be grounds to take the unprecedented and possibly legally dubious step of firing him. “I think it sort of is,” Trump said.
