Clear goals help you understand what you want to achieve, while metrics allow you to measure progress and identify areas for improvement. When I led a project to enhance our feedback system, we first set specific goals, like reducing response times and improving customer satisfaction. We established metrics to track these goals and used the data to continuously refine our process. This approach helped us create a more effective feedback loop.

Start by asking: What is the purpose of this process? What outcomes matter most: speed, accuracy, user satisfaction, cost efficiency? Then, translate those goals into measurable indicators. For example: If your goal is faster onboarding, track time-to-productivity. If it’s knowledge retention, use pre/post assessments. If it’s process adoption, measure engagement and completion rates. Make sure your metrics are aligned with the broader business objectives, and revisit them regularly. Metrics should evolve as your process matures or as the business context shifts. Finally, communicate these goals and metrics clearly to the people involved so they understand not just what to do, but why it matters.

For instance, when we introduced a new feedback system, we implemented the changes and tracked performance metrics weekly. By closely monitoring the results, we could see the impact of our actions and adjust as needed to ensure continuous improvement.
