To engage with seldom heard audiences, prioritise psychological and physical safety of participants and researchers. Both should be provided a safe and supportive environment. Verian in France conducted a survey for the OFDT - Observatoire français des drogues et des tendances addictives looking at drug exposure among adult male inmates in mainland France. Our team upheld ethical standards and trained interviewers to understand the unique challenges of research in the prison environment. Amplifying the voices of social housing residents Verian UK team worked with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to design a programme of engagement activities that would enable social housing residents to share experiences and voice opinions on the key issues they face regarding housing quality. The report was made accessible to panelists, providing transparency and highlighting their value in the policy making process. Communicate research findings to participants and explain how insights will be used at the end of every cycle. This transparency builds trust and reinforces the value of their voices in the process. Our longitudinal research programme, Voice of Ukraine, collects robust data and insights on the views, priorities, and challenge facing displaced Ukrainian nationals who are now living across Europe. Recently, we hosted a private webinar to share our findings and invite direct discussion between researchers and participants. Their input is shaping the next waves of the study. When engaging with seldom heard audiences, accessibility must be considered in all stages of design. Even with highly motivated participants, if research tools are not designed with accessibility in mind, then their ability to engage is at risk. Here's how our Verian experts in Finland considered accessibility; using advocacy groups, collaborative approaches, and working with advocacy groups. Collaborating with community groups builds trust, deepens engagement and maximises opportunities for engagement in the design and development phases. Verian partnered with Heriot-Watt University, supported by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), to provide a vital snapshot of experiences of extreme material hardship of the most destitute in UK society. Our team partnered with a wide a range of voluntary services including food banks, churches, soup runs, asylum services, and hostels to administer questionnaires we provided. Strengthen partnerships and build peer networks Collaborate with community groups to build trust, deepen engagement and maximise opportunities for engagement in the design and development phases. This approach ensures voices are heard and play an active role in shaping research, as well as making participants feel valued and safe. Our team in Australia partnered with Butterfly Foundation to further understand the prevalence of lived experience of eating disorders and body image concerns within the community, and to explore community knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes about body image and eating disorders. See how community partnership shaped the outcomes of the study: https://lnkd.in/egNtWPfk #SeldomHeard #Verian

It's essential to design research approaches that are inclusive to ensure that insights reflect and recognise diversity. Our team in The Netherlands partnered with De Nederlandsche Bank to explore the accessibility of the Dutch payment system. By using multiple recruitment strategies and offering a range of ways to take part, they made sure the study captured a wide and valuable spectrum of consumer insights. Recognise and reflect diversity Biases can be embedded in research design and reflected in fieldwork. It's therefore essential to apply the same depth and breath ambitions to seldom heard groups as to commonly heard groups. Our team in Brussels carried out a cross-national survey among Roma population in 10 European countries for the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, applying the human rights-based approach to data collection. This ensured no data collection activity would create or reinforce existing discrimination, bias, or stereotypes. Planning for complexity is key; there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Our team in France collaborated with Growing Up in Digital Europe (GUIDE) to tackle the gaps in data on the wellbeing of children and young people. Recognising how existing studies often overlooked crucial aspects like environment, risk behaviours, safety, culture, and psychological, mental, and emotional wellbeing, the study aimed to provide a more holistic understanding of child wellbeing.
