About us
Marshall Day Acoustics (MDA) is one of the world's leading acoustic consultancies. We provide specialist consulting in all areas of acoustics, with expertise in noise and vibration for a wide variety of projects including intricate performing arts spaces, large-scale civic and commercial developments, and expansive industry and transportation infrastructure. Sir Harold Marshall and Christopher Day established Marshall Day Acoustics in Auckland, NZ in 1981. Peter Fearnside came on board as the third partner and founded Marshall Day Acoustics in Australia in 1987. In our team, we have expert skills in traditional areas (environmental, building and room acoustics) as well as more specialised fields like vibration, marine and underwater acoustics, sound insulation theory and data acquisition. We provide our advice in the most appropriate way for each project. This may include delivering reports, design advice, peer reviews, expert evidence, seminars, community and stakeholder consultation, developing policies and guideline or virtual reality simulations. In addition to our specialist acoustic consulting work, we develop high quality acoustic design tools (INSUL, IRIS, dBWav, dBSea, Zorba) that are used globally by scholars, consultants, designers, and manufacturers. We are continually looking to improve our services, expand our technical expertise and develop our equipment and systems in order to provide the most comprehensive and cutting-edge design tools.

We are incredibly proud of our work on the Coliseum Theatre. Completed in 2019, the state-of-the-art performance space set a new benchmark for immersive sound experiences. It's rewarding to see the venue continue to inspire, a clear testament to what can be achieved when acoustic design, architecture, and technology come together. It was a privilege to be part of the collaboration that brought the project to life. Matthew Ottley, Peter Fearnside, Simon Connolly
I had the incredible opportunity to experience L-Acoustics Immersive Sound Centre at their Highgate Showroom in London a couple of days ago. This was truly a next-level immersive audio experience that reminded me why we invested in this revolutionary technology. Let me take you back to the beginning...when we opened the Coliseum Theatre, it was thanks to the vision and persuasion of Bicci, our Technical Operations Manager at the time, and with our CEO Richard's backing, we took a leap into the future of audio and included L-ISA HyperReal Sound technology in the build. The system was perfectly matched to our state-of-the-art performance space. L-Acoustics engineer Julien Laval designed our speaker system to custom fit our space. An incredible team of specialists was assembled from Jands Pty Ltd, Marshall Day Acoustics, and Fredon to ensure we had the highest level of technical expertise to deliver a truly immersive 3D audio environment. L-ISA transcends traditional stereo to create something extraordinary – a spatial audio experience that doesn't just reach your ears, but envelops your entire being. You don't simply hear the music; you're positioned within it. The best way to describe it is to say that sound flows from within, around, above, and below, transforming every crescendo and whispered note into a living presence that surrounds you completely. My visit to Highgate was nothing short of inspiring. A huge thank you to Julie and Steve for your time and hospitality, and what a special surprise to experience a live music performance by fellow Australian and multi-style cellist William Jack in this space. Hearing live music in L-Acoustics' dedicated showcase environment truly demonstrated the full potential of this technology. The Coliseum is pioneering the future of live performance as the only venue south of the equator with this cutting-edge spatial audio technology. I wanted to experience and unlock the full creative potential of this system and can't wait to create an event that will truly showcase its full capacity and give our audiences an experience they'll never forget. The future of live performance isn't coming – it's here, and it sounds absolutely incredible. #LiveSound #AudioTechnology #LAcoustics #ImmersiveAudio #TheatreTechnology #ColiseumTheatre #WestHQ #WesternSydney Gerry Matthew

🎭🎵 The Court Theatre is back - and sounding better than ever. The new Court Theatre in Christchurch has officially opened, and we're thrilled to see it featured in the latest issue of CX Magazine. Led by Jon Farren, our acoustic design included optimising room acoustics, isolating the busy scenery workshop from the 377-seat Stewart Theatre, and delivering unobtrusive air conditioning to keep performances distraction-free. A longtime Court regular, Jon used smart, cost-effective solutions like floating floors on rubber springs, lining the concrete structure with sound-damping materials, and locally sourced materials to meet the challenges of this building. It was a pleasure to attend the recent blessing and opening of the new Ratisbonne Discovery Centre at Our Lady Of Sion College in Box Hill. The three-level STEAMD and Administration Centre, designed by Williams Ross Architects, includes science and project labs, music and drama spaces (with a recording studio), flexible learning areas, a fitness centre with a weights room, and administration offices. We were involved in the acoustic design of the project, which involved: • Reviewing mechanical services to ensure suitable internal noise levels • Acoustic design of the music space to support performance and recording • Acoustic separation between spaces to reduce sound transfer • Inclusion of acoustic absorption throughout - particularly important in open areas A fantastic facility that will support innovation, creativity and learning for years to come.
