There appear to be about 90 million adaptations of Wind in the Willows, and after looking through clips of a bunch of them, I can't seem to find the one I grew up on!

It was a cartoon version that I saw in the mid-1990s, possibly made earlier. It was focused on Toad; I believe the opening sequence was him singing with his horse as they gallivanted through the countryside until getting smashed by the motorcar, I think without Mole or Rat with them at all. It ended with Toad discovering airplanes. The main plot elements I remember were (1) saving Toad Hall from the weasels, who had gotten their hands on the deed, and (2) Toad being tried for dangerous driving in court, his horse testifying against him, and him being thrown in jail, from which he escapes.

I see there were some animated series made, too. Perhaps it was a compilation of episodes of one of these? It was on a single VHS tape, as I recall. Sadly, when I digitized my family's VHS tapes a few years ago, I couldn't find this one.

It is not the 1987 one, the 1988 one, or the 1995 one.

Thanks in advance!

  • In the novel the protagonists save Toad Hall, not Badger Hall, from the weasels and get the deed back. I guess most movies would have the heroes save Toad Hall and not Badeger Hall. So if your memory of Badger Hall is correct it would be a clue to which production it was. Commented yesterday
  • @M.A.Golding Whoops, you're right. Toad Hall. Editing. Commented yesterday

It is possible that the version you are thinking of is Disney version The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949).

Toad is named J. Thaddeus Toad, Badger is Angus MacBadger, and Toad's horse is named Cyril Proudbottom and does testify in court.
