I recently noticed that my inbox indicator has a negative counter:

screenshot of inbox indicator with -1 appearing

Update: I investigated a bit and apparently this was caused by a user who commented something and then removed their comment, all done before I checked my inbox.

As you can see below, I have since got three unread messages, but indicator shows "2" which means there's something missing.

counter miss one message

UPD: steps to reproduce

  1. someone adds comment
  2. you open inbox popup and see that comment
  3. that comment is then removed while your inbox stays open
  4. you then mark that comment as read (by clicking on envelope icon)

after all this done here's what we get:

Personally my inbox looks ok, probably there're some specific steps needed to reproduce it? Commented Apr 8 at 11:41

I think we need a little more information. Is this a one-off glitch; does "Mark all as read" resolve it? What about refreshing? What about the "full inbox"? Commented Apr 8 at 11:55
  • refreshing not helps

  • @security_paranoid, "Mark all as read" possibly this helps. ping me for checking please

  • test ping (for you to check) Commented Apr 8 at 13:14
  • @nicael, thanks, seems after "Mark all as read" - all ok. Let's try one more test: add comment and remove it in short time (before i read)

  • Probably related problem that was fixed however (so it's definitely not a duplicate, but might be related) Commented Apr 8 at 13:30
  • Either way @Grundy could this probably be a chat message and not a comment, that caused that "-1" issue? (just maybe) Commented Apr 8 at 13:38
  • @nicael, hmm, maybe, but i think, this more related to delete comment, but not sure what steps to reproduce may be and in what order.

  • Could be also related to the fact there was a post where you were @pinged and then they continued discussion in chat, which caused that ping to be copied to chat (but probably it was mis-counted in inbox). Commented Apr 8 at 13:44

@nicael, i noticed error after user delete comment here Methinks it was too fast: send and delete and this is a bit problem with notification

  • @Grundy but possibly that's only because you're a moderator and can see deleted comments (it's still a glitch of course). Maybe someone can test it over there, on the site you moderator. I'll do one here anyway. Commented Apr 8 at 20:29
  • Just sent and deleted one here; "-1" the result? Commented Apr 8 at 20:30

@Grundy didn't see the edit; my apologies :) great work, I'm glad we could work together to reproduce it! Commented Apr 8 at 21:01

Just to be clear, in the "steps to reproduce", someone else must add and delete the comments, of course? If possible, when you get the time, could you maybe elaborate a little on the four steps, so it's easier to repro? Commented Apr 8 at 21:03
