As of December 2024, 47% of all Eurofins leadership roles were occupied by women, a percentage we are constantly working on increasing through targeted initiatives. 🔬 𝗔𝘀𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 🌹 Carlos Salinas, Technical Expert and Senior PLM Analyst at Eurofins Built Environment Testing, has over 35 years of experience testing for asbestos. Over the course of his impressive career, he has developed a keen eye for the artistically appealing side of science. These stunning cliches might look like floral paintings, but they actually showcase chrysotile roses, a unique type of asbestos fibre. Carlos creates them using special microscopy techniques and incorporating other components, leveraging his strong analytical expertise to turn a chemical hazard into an art piece – all the while respecting the adequate safety protocols. Carlos’ work was recently featured in the Global Asbestos Forum Magazine, providing a great example of the passion the Eurofins Built Environment Testing team brings to work every day. In 2024, the Eurofins network formally committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an international project that provides clear guidelines and thresholds for businesses working to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. These targets will be set in accordance with the latest advancements in climate science and validated by independent scientific bodies, with the long-term goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C degrees by the end of the 21st century as outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement. 📊    The Eurofins network’s commitment to the SBTi strengthens an already active strategy to reduce carbon intensity, switch to renewable energy sources, and support carbon offsetting. The Eurofins Foundation is proud to provide support in the form of grants to students in STEM, whose research work contributes to protecting health and the environment but who lack financial resources.   Amongst the recipients are students from the University of Oxford’s prestigious Departments of Chemistry, Materials, Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences who used the funds to conduct important research abroad, including an ecosystem development study in Trinidad. The Eurofins Foundation grants also enabled these students to continue their academic work during challenging periods, such as the gap between the end of financial support from other sources and the completion of their theses, as well as through times of personal hardship.   Florian Heupel, Carbon Footprint Reduction Director and Group Marketing Director, is an Oxford alumnus himself and a member of the Eurofins Foundation’s Steering Committee. He recently met with these students and their supervisors at Abbot’s kitchen, a historical site that was one of the first purpose-built chemistry laboratories to have ever been built back in the XIXth century — a fitting setting to celebrate scientific research and collaboration.
