🔍Τον Ιούνιο του 2025 αποστολή εμπειρογνωμόνων της Σύμβασης της Βέρνης πραγματοποίησε κρίσιμους επιτόπιους έλεγχους στους δύο σημαντικότερους βιότοπους ωοτοκίας της θαλάσσιας χελώνας Caretta caretta στη Μεσόγειο: - στο Εθνικό Θαλάσσιο Πάρκο Ζακύνθου και - στην Περιοχή Προστασίας της Φύσης του Κυπαρισσιακού Κόλπου Τα ευρήματα επιβεβαιώνουν πως, παρά την αύξηση των φωλιών, οι απειλές παραμένουν σοβαρές και διαρκείς: παράνομες κατασκευές, ανθρώπινη όχληση, φωτορύπανση, υποβάθμιση των αμμοθινών, ελλιπής φύλαξη. Η προστασία του είδους εξαρτάται άμεσα από τη διαρκή λήψη και εφαρμογή μέτρων. Η βιώσιμη τουριστική ανάπτυξη μπορεί να επιτευχθεί μόνο μέσα από τον σεβασμό στη φύση και τα πολύτιμα είδη της. 📄 Η τελική έκθεση των εμπειρογνωμόνων αναμένεται να ενισχύσει τις πιέσεις προς τις αρμόδιες αρχές, για ουσιαστική εφαρμογή των δεσμεύσεων της χώρας. The findings are clear: despite an increase in nest numbers, serious and ongoing threats persist, including illegal constructions, human disturbance, light pollution, dune degradation, and weak enforcement. The species remains conservation-dependent — only continuous protection efforts can safeguard its future. Thrilled to have completed our first week of sea turtle monitoring in the Amvrakikos Gulf and to be working with ARCHELON as field leaders alongside Luisa Fernanda López Lozano. This project focuses on collecting data on the local sea turtle population (primarily Caretta caretta) in this important foraging area, through in-water surveys, capture using the rodeo technique, and individual identification and tagging. Looking forward to what the season will bring us!

My time with ARCHELON – the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece – has come to an end, and what an unforgettable experience it’s been. For the past weeks, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to sea turtle conservation alongside an incredible team of passionate individuals. From monitoring nesting activity and protecting vulnerable nests, to collecting field data and contributing to public awareness efforts, this experience offered an immersive introduction to practical, in-situ conservation. Grateful for the memories, the new friendships, and the chance to give back to nature and while this adventure has come to an end, I’ll be definitely coming back!

Μόλις ολοκληρώσαμε την τοποθέτηση δορυφορικών πομπών σε χελώνες της Κρήτης στα πλαίσια του ευρωπαϊκού έργου #LIFEMareNatura. 📡Η τηλεμετρία μέσω δορυφορικών πομπών επιτρέπει στους ερευνητές να παρακολουθούν τις μετακινήσεις των χελωνών σε πραγματικό χρόνο, προσφέροντας πληροφορίες για τις μεταναστευτικές τους διαδρομές, τις περιοχές τροφοληψίας και τη χρήση των θαλάσσιων ενδιαιτημάτων τους. 🌊 Οι ερευνητικές δραστηριότητες κατά τη διάρκεια του έργου LIFE MareNatura έχουν σκοπό να συμβάλλουν στην επέκταση του Ευρωπαϊκού Δικτύου Natura 2000 και την ανακήρυξη νέων θαλάσσιων προστατευόμενων περιοχών. Ο σκηνοθέτης Roberto Lo Monaco και η ομάδα παραγωγής του MEDASSET έχουν ταξιδέψει σε Ελλάδα και Ιταλία για να απαθανατίσουν τις δράσεις των διάφορων φορέων του έργου. ----------------------- We have completed the deployment of satellite transmitters on turtles in Crete as part of the European LIFE MareNatura project. 📡Telemetry via satellite transmitters allows researchers to monitor the movements of turtles in real time, providing information on their migration routes, feeding areas and the use of their marine habitats. 🌊 The research activities during the LIFE MareNatura project aim to contribute to the expansion of the European Natura 2000 Network and the declaration of new marine protected areas. As part of our summer program with Hellenic American University we visited ARCHELON the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, one of Europe’s leading organizations in marine wildlife conservation. Spending time at the Rescue Centre near Glyfada, we witnessed the rehabilitation process of injured sea turtles and learned how long-term efforts in environmental protection, public education, and responsible tourism are interconnected. This visit reminded us that sustainability goes beyond infrastructure and policy, it’s also about care, consistency, and community.

Finding possible adaptation solutions for animal species that live in the sea and along our Mediterranean coasts, habitats which are increasingly affected by the climate crisis. This is the objective of the LIFE ADAPTS (climate change ADAptations to Protect Turtles and monk Seals) project, which has just been launched and is financed by the European Union. The project will last 5 years and will be carried out in three Mediterranean countries, Italy, Greece and Cyprus, where key reproductive and living areas have been identified for three symbolic species of the Mare Nostrum: green turtle (Chelonia mydas), loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus). ----------- Το έργο LIFE ADAPTS (Προσαρμογές στην Κλιματική αλλαγή για την Προστασία των Θαλάσσιων Χελωνών και της Μεσογειακής Φώκιας) είναι μια νέα ευρωπαϊκή πρωτοβουλία που στοχεύει στην ανάπτυξη στρατηγικών προσαρμογής στην κλιματική κρίση, για την προστασία εμβληματικών θαλάσσιων ειδών της Μεσογείου: της πράσινης χελώνας (Chelonia mydas), της θαλάσσιας χελώνας Καρέττα (Caretta caretta) και της μεσογειακής φώκιας (Monachus monachus). #LIFEADAPTS https://lnkd.in/dQ8taXNK

ARCHELON began the effort to record incidents of dead turtles washing up on Greek shores in 1992, establishing the National Sea Turtle Rescue Network. Every year, ARCHELON receives phone calls, messages and reports from citizens and local Port Authorities across the country, along with photographs and other information about sea turtle strandings. This way, in 2024, we recorded 1,044 dead turtles on the Greek coastline, while already halfway through 2025, we have recorded 481 more incidents. ------ Ο ΑΡΧΕΛΩΝ ξεκίνησε τη προσπάθεια καταγραφής των περιστατικών που νεκρές χελώνες ξεβράζονται στις ελληνικές ακτές από το 1992, ιδρύοντας το Εθνικό Δίκτυο Διάσωσης Θαλάσσιων Χελωνών. Κάθε χρόνο φτάνουν στον ΑΡΧΕΛΩΝ τηλεφωνήματα, μηνύματα πολιτών καθώς και τα «Δελτία Εκθαλάσσωσης» από τις κατά τόπους Λιμενικές Αρχές όλης της χώρας, μαζί με φωτογραφίες και άλλα στοιχεία σχετικά με εκβρασμούς θαλάσσιων χελωνών.
