Emerging economies are likely to drive the increase in meat, dairy and fish consumption and production over the next decade. But in low-income countries, daily intake of these nutrient-rich foods will remain low, at just 143 calories by 2034, well below the 300-calorie benchmark set by the FAO's Healthy Diet Basket. The OECD-FAO #AgOutlook 2025-2034 offers new insights into agricultural trends over the next 10 years, highlighting shifts in dietary patterns towards more diverse and nutritious foods.   Despite significant progress, many people in lower-middle-income countries will continue to face challenges in accessing adequate nutrition, putting achievement of the SDG target on improved global nutrition by 2030 at risk. This enduring nutritional gap sheds light on important structural barriers, including limited access to affordable protein-rich foods.  Discover more key trends: https://brnw.ch/21wU9r5

Robust, comparable data on emissions is the foundation of effective climate policy. Carbon intensity metrics are increasingly central to climate policy, underlying instruments such as carbon pricing, border carbon adjustments, carbon markets, green procurement and green product standards. New reports endorsed by the 60 member countries of the Inclusive Forum on Carbon Mitigation Approaches (#IFCMA), provide much-needed guidance on how to generate carbon intensity metrics that work across borders and sectors. These insights are critical to develop carbon intensity metrics that support transparent and cost-effective climate action while avoiding disruptions to global trade. Stay tuned for IFCMA webinars in September and further work on interoperable carbon intensity metrics that can reduce compliance burdens and support international co-operation Learn more: https://brnw.ch/21wUbfv

5G subscriptions surged by 48% over the last year, now representing 33% of mobile subscriptions across the OECD. Our OECD Broadband Statistics shows that fibre and 5G continue to expand their footprint, while fixed wireless access technology gains ground in OECD countries to meet the demand for ubiquitous and high-quality connectivity. Key highlights: ➡️ Fibre expansion: Fibre now accounts for 44.6% of fixed broadband subscriptions, with four countries exceeding the 80% threshold for fibre's share of total fixed broadband connections: Iceland (91%), Korea (90%), Spain (88%) and Lithuania (80%). ➡️ FWA gains ground: Fixed wireless access (FWA) subscriptions across the OECD grew by 17% in the past year, notably in Hungary (71%), the United States (39%) and the United Kingdom (30.4%). FWA offers a cost-effective connectivity option, particularly in underserved regions. ➡️ Satellite on the rise: Satellite subscriptions grew by 22.6% in one year, with the United States alone accounting for 74% of OECD satellite subscriptions. ➡️ New countries included: For the first time, our broadband statistics feature data for six countries currently in the OECD accession process: Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Peru, Romania and Thailand. With ageing populations, the number of people of working age will decline in many OECD countries. What does this mean for labour markets and economic growth? People around the world are living longer and healthier lives than ever before, reflecting better policies, health care systems and innovation. However, without decisive policy action to adapt to demographic change, GDP per capita growth across the OECD could slow by 40%, from 1% a year (2006–19) to 0.6% (2024–60), according to the latest OECD #EmploymentOutlook. As Stéphane CARCILLO, Head of Jobs and Income Division at the OECD, explains, the stakes are high. But governments have powerful tools to boost economic growth and living standards: ➡️Improve job opportunities for older workers and equip older workers with new skills through lifelong learning ➡️Unlock untapped labour potential by increasing employment among young people, women, and migrants ➡️Spark productivity growth by embracing innovation, AI, and automation ➡️Remove barriers to job-to-job mobility ➡️Tackle age discrimination head-on Explore how ambitious reforms can turn the demographic tide: https://brnw.ch/21wU4ho | OECD Social

High-quality Internet access is a necessity – but not a given. Broadband access and quality have been improving but urban-rural connectivity divides persist. At the end of 2024: ➡️ Users in cities across the #OECD experienced mobile download speeds 37.2% higher than those in rural areas (74.5 vs 54.3 Mbps). ➡️ People in metro regions in the OECD experienced median fixed broadband download speeds that were 43.8% higher than those far from metropolitan areas. ➡️ Urban users in the #G20 experienced mobile download speeds of 63.8 Mbps, on average, compared to 48.5 Mbps in rural areas. Strong institutions, advanced infrastructure, and a highly skilled workforce have contributed to the Netherlands’ resilience in the face of recent economic shocks. A tight labour market, electricity grid congestion and housing shortages underscore the urgency of structural reforms to strengthen growth and sustain international competitiveness. Today, Alvaro Santos Pereira, OECD Chief Economist, launched the new OECD Economic Survey of Netherlands 2025 with Vincent Karremans, Minister of Economic Affairs in The Hague.
