I see people asserting here that because prices must be mentioned, the delimiter for inline MathJax is \$ rather than $, so that the latter can be used when prices are mentioned. But in normal LaTeX and in normal MathJax, there is no difficulty with putting a dollar sign in the rendered image: the delimiter is $ and where the code is \$, a dollar sign appears in the rendered image.

Why can't it be done in the normal way here?

\$\begingroup\$ Thought only: Mathjax seems here to have hijaxed reality for its own purposes. The system here allows people in this case not to need to know Mathjax in order to not use it. \$\endgroup\$

On sites that want to use dollar signs normally (this one and a few others), SE has another mode that uses two dollar signs $$ to escape into mathjax and \$ for inline mathjax.

\$\begingroup\$ You will have noted that I was already aware of that before posting (otherwise I could not have posted what I did). Your answer does not address the actual question, which was: Why not do it in the usual way? \$\endgroup\$ Commented Mar 15 at 17:03
