Rethinking Cancer Treatment: when less may be more What if giving cancer patients lower doses could actually help them live longer with fewer side effects? 🔬 New research published in Cancer Research challenges the traditional "maximum dose" approach to cancer treatment. Instead of hitting cancer cells with the highest possible doses, adaptive therapy adjusts treatment based on tumor response—maintaining a balance between drug-sensitive and drug-resistant cancer cells. The science behind it: ✓ Drug-sensitive cancer cells are more competitive than resistant ones when treatment pressure is removed ✓ By keeping sensitive cells alive, they naturally suppress resistant cell growth ✓ Mouse studies show longer survival with adaptive therapy vs. standard treatment Real-world application: Anticancer Fund is supporting the ACTOv clinical trial for advanced ovarian cancer patients in the UK, led by Professor Michelle Lockley at Queen Mary University of London. 💬 As Prof. Lockley explains: "Patients are very open to the idea that we may be able to achieve better control of their cancer with lower drug doses and fewer side effects." This research represents a shift from viewing cancer as an enemy to destroy at all costs, to managing it as a chronic condition. It's about working with cancer's evolutionary dynamics rather than against them. 💥 The implications extend beyond ovarian cancer—this approach could benefit many cancer types, especially those with effective targeted therapies and measurable resistance markers. What do you think? ⁉️ Could this approach change how we think about cancer treatment? 👉 Read all about adaptive therapy on the website of Anticancer Fund: https://lnkd.in/e2AM2qJQ Or read a full interview with Professor Michelle Lockley right here in the article below 👇 #anticancerfund #cancerresearch Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London) The Institute of Cancer Research

🎙️ Making Our Voice Heard for Cancer Patients in Europe Today, LYDIE MEHEUS of Anticancer Fund had the privilege of presenting at the European Parliament's public hearing on pharmaceutical legislation reform - a critical moment for shaping the future of cancer care across Europe. 🗝️ Our key message was clear: Drug repurposing represents a promising and complementary strategy for medical innovation that can deliver real benefits to patients and society. However, this approach requires a supportive ecosystem that recognises and adequately supports the vital role of non-commercial actors. 🔬 Why this matters: Non-commercial research organisations like Anticancer Fund often drive innovation in areas where traditional commercial incentives fall short - particularly in rare cancers and childhood cancers where patient populations are smaller but needs are just as urgent. 💡 The game-changer: Article 48 of the proposed EU Pharmaceutical Regulation could be transformative. If implemented, it will create a clear pathway for translating clinical evidence from non-commercial trials into real-world clinical practice, directly benefiting patients who need these treatments. 👉 A big thank you to the co-chairs MEP Tomislav Sokol, MEP Vlad Voiculescu, MEP Tilly Metz, MEP Stine Bosse, and MEP ALESSANDRA MORETTI for emphasising that we must look beyond just the pharmaceutical package. As they noted, addressing unmet medical needs requires examining the entire ecosystem - from cross-border clinical trials to research conditions and public funding. Their message resonated deeply. 🤝 Thank you to all stakeholders who participated in this important dialogue. #cancerresearch #drugrepurposing #anticancerfund REMEDi4ALL Patricia Vandamme

👉 July is Sarcoma Awareness Month When looking at the news headlines announcing impressive breakthroughs and new treatment options in cancer, it is easy to imagine that progress is happening across the board and that things are improving in all cancer types. 🔬 But sadly that is not the case – while it’s a positive picture in some areas in others the truth is that there has been no progress in decades. This is particularly true when it comes to the family of cancers called sarcomas. 😪 These are cancers of the connective tissues such as bone, cartilage and blood vessels, and are often still being treated as they were 30 or more years ago. So let’s use sarcoma awareness month to say it loud and clear. 📢 ✔️ Read more about why sarcoma is a large unmed need: https://lnkd.in/eeRqAX3 ✔️ Read more about a trial we fund, together with EORTC - European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer: https://lnkd.in/edAH8_w3 #anticancerfund
July is Sarcoma Awareness Month. #Sarcomas - including retroperitoneal sarcomas - are frequently overlooked cancers. These tumors grow deep within the abdomen, often going undetected until they reach a large size. Retroperitoneal sarcomas are at the center of the STREXIT 2 Project, a major research effort aimed at improving treatment strategies. While science moves forward, awareness remains critical - both throughout the patient journey and in raising recognition beyond the sarcoma community. This month, SPAGN, the patient organization behind STREXIT 2, shares the global theme for signs and symptoms: #KnowYourNormal. The campaign highlights sarcoma patients’ unique experiences and emphasizes the importance of trusting your instincts. It’s a message that resonates with everyone - but carries special urgency in the context of rare cancers like retroperitoneal sarcomas. STREXIT 2 is funded by the European Union and is under the legal sponsorship of EORTC - European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer. #SarcomaAwarenessMonth2025 #SarcomaAwareness #RetroperitonealSarcoma #RareCancer #KnowYourNormal #SPAGN #CancerSupport #StrongerTogether #CancerResearch #KnowYourBody #SarcomaSignsAndSymptoms #WearYellowWednesday #STREXIT2_Horizon #HorizonEurope #EUCancerMission European Commission EORTC - European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer

On Saturday, July 5th, our colleague Ilse Rooman will co-lead a session with Costello-Goldring Eithne at the European Pancreatic Club annual meeting. 🧬 "Bridging the gap: from preclinical discoveries to clinical trials in pancreatic cancer" 🔬➡️🏥 Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most challenging diseases to treat, with many clinical trials failing to deliver expected results. This session addresses an important issue in cancer research: the disconnect between promising laboratory findings and successful patient treatments. 💡 Key areas of focus include: - Better understanding of tumor biology 🧪 - Development of preclinical models that reflect clinical reality - Rigorous preclinical testing before moving to clinical trials 📊 - Comprehensive analysis of patient samples in clinical research The session aims to present both research successes and the obstacles that researchers encounter. While preclinical research in pancreatic cancer generates hope, translating these discoveries into effective treatments involves scientific, financial, and regulatory challenges that need to be better understood. 🤝 This discussion is an important step toward developing more effective strategies for moving from laboratory discoveries to treatments that effective benefit patients. 🎯 #anticancerfund #cancerresearch PCE Pancreatic Cancer Europe
