Are You Building or Escaping?

Are You Building or Escaping?

Let’s get real for a second.

Not every company is born from vision. Some are born from escape.

Escaping a toxic job. Escaping shame. Escaping irrelevance. Even escaping a version of yourself you no longer want to be.

I’ve coached founders who were building as fast as they could… not toward something, but away from something. And when they hit a plateau, or a raise fell through, or a key hire quit—suddenly they had no compass.

It’s terrifying. And it’s also a gift.

Because that’s when they ask the question they skipped at the start:

“Why am I really building this?”

If your answer is because I want to prove something, or because I’m scared to be still, that’s okay.

It’s not a red flag. It’s a mirror.

Reflect on this:

Write down three reasons you’re doing what you’re doing. Then ask, “Which of these are toward reasons—and which are away from?”

Knowing your fuel lets you switch tanks when one runs out.

Building from pain rather than passion is like starting from behind the line. It's not a bad thing to want to prove something, but at some point you have to win on the field, not just that initial sprint. Building toward something 'real' means focusing on our values and vision, our team and our vision.

Sometimes we start from a place of survival or proving something, but eventually, we have to build from a deeper, more authentic place.
