Why Your LinkedIn Follow-Ups Get Ignored (And How to Fix That)

Why Your LinkedIn Follow-Ups Get Ignored (And How to Fix That)

You’ve already taken the time to craft a well-written message, sent a polite follow-up, waited a few days hoping for a reply… And in the end, nothing.

No “seen,” no “sorry, not interested,” not even a courtesy emoji. 😅 And now you're wondering, “What did I do wrong?”

🛑 Spoiler: It's not necessarily you that’s the problem.

Not your offer. Not even the timing.

In reality, if your follow-up went unnoticed, it’s often because it looks like all the others. 🌟 The good news?

You don’t have to reinvent everything to be more effective. Often, a small detail is enough to make a big difference:

  • ✏️ A slightly lighter tone.
  • 👀 A friendly opening line.
  • 😄 A wink or a touch of humor.
  • 💬 Or even just… a message that feels real.

Why no one replies to your follow-ups

You send a follow-up, you wait for an answer… and you get absolute silence. Not because your message is bad. But because it doesn’t grab attention.

📉 Your follow-ups end up in the same bucket as 99% of others. And that bucket is called “Messages we ignore without guilt.”

Why? Because they are

  • 🧱 Too long (no one has time to read a text wall).
  • 🧊 Too cold (“just following up,” “regarding my previous message” = straight to the freezer).
  • 🤖 Too generic (zero personalization, total copy-paste vibes).
  • 😴 Too flat (no hook, no emotion, no reason to hit “reply”).

What your leads really want

No one likes to be the annoying person on LinkedIn… but at the same time, not following up at all means missing opportunities. So how do you find the sweet spot? Here are my top tips :

1. Talk like a real person (not like a CRM)

Your message should sound like you, not like a pre-written template. Forget the stiff phrases like “just checking in” or “I’m reaching out to…” Write like you’re messaging a colleague or a LinkedIn connection you actually enjoy talking to.

Example:

❌ “I’m following up regarding my previous request…”

✅ “Hey{Firstname}}, I figured my message might have gotten lost—happens all the time here 😅.”

This version feels more human, more real, and more engaging.

2. Keep it simple, short, and direct

We often think we need to “say a lot” to convince. But on LinkedIn, clarity and brevity are your best friends.

The goal is to deliver your message in 3 sentences max, using a simple structure:

  1. A clear hook or follow-up.
  2. A brief reminder of why you’re reaching out.
  3. A simple question or call to action (but not pushy).

No need to tell your life story: your prospect should understand the point in 5 seconds. ⏰

💬 Example:

Hey {{Firstname}}, Just following up on my message from last week. Is this still something that’s relevant for you right now? (or would you prefer to revisit it later?)

3. Add a little something extra (value, wink, resource)

A follow-up isn’t always a request. It can be a great excuse to share value, or at least to show you actually thought about the person.

A post they’d be into, an article relevant to their industry, a podcast, a news update… anything works as long as it’s meaningful.

It proves you didn’t just pick them at random — and that you’re not just taking their attention: you’ve earned it.

💡 Bonus tip: when you share something, also ask a question or open a mini-discussion to invite a reply.

💬 Example:

Hey {{Firstname}},

I came across this post about [their industry’s evolution] and immediately thought of what you told me. Sharing it here in case it speaks to you too 👇

Would love to hear your thoughts on it, by the way 😉

4. Add a touch of humor (or at least a smile)

Humor is your secret weapon to break the cold, robotic tone of most LinkedIn messages.

You don’t need to be a stand-up comic—just show you’re relaxed, that you have a little self-awareness, and that you’re not trying to force anything. A GIF, a pop culture reference, a bit of self-deprecation—all can help trigger a reply (and maybe even a smile, which is always a win).

⚠️ Heads-up: always adapt your tone to your audience. You can be fun and professional—the goal isn’t to be silly, just approachable.

💬 Example:

Hey {{Firstname}},

Trying one last follow-up before I go old school and send a handwritten letter 📬

More seriously, I just wanted to make sure my message didn’t slip between two notifications. Is this still something on your radar? 😊

It’s not following up that turns people off… it’s how you follow up. Most messages go unseen because they’re :

  • 💤 too generic
  • 🤐 too serious
  • ❌ or not designed to spark a real conversation

But you? You can do better. Not by writing a “perfect” message—but by sending one that actually feels human.

  • 👉 You can be professional without being boring.
  • 👉 You can be concise without being cold.
  • 👉 You can follow up without begging.

So next time you click “Send,” just ask yourself:

Would I want to reply to this? 😉
