Why My Website Isn't Generating Leads

Many Small Business Owners consult me with their number one concern: "Why is my website isn't generating quality leads?" They tell me that their growth is stalled because they don't get any leads from their website most days, and even when someone does contact them occasionally, these leads are no good. I schedule an online meeting with them to co-browse and analyze their website to determine the key reasons. Here is what I find most of the times:

  1. Poor Visibility i.e. Traffic : If your website isn't getting enough traffic, it won't generate leads. Most business owners don't even know how many visits they get on on their website, much less who are visiting (and when I ask them this question, they draw a blank.). First things first: Install a suitable website analytics tool such as Hubspot, Mouseflow, SimilarWeb, Semrush or Google Analytics. Once analytics is installed correctly, you can then analyze who is visiting your website, from where your visitors are arriving to your website (traffic source), what pages are they browsing, how long are they staying, what actions are they taking, and why and where they fall off (without taking any action.) Most of the times, lack of traffic is due to ineffective SEO (Search Engine Optimization), meaning your website isn't ranking well on search engines like Google, Bing, Apple, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo and Maps. Owners will need to optimize their website content, meta tags, and backlinks to improve the visibility either themselves or hire a reputed SEO marketing agency (make sure you ask for testimonials for clients who are in your industry.) Besides website visibility and traffic, there are severe other reasons listed here as to why your website does a poor job of generating leads.
  2. Unappealing Design: Did you design the website yourself, or hire a professional? A poorly designed website can not only deter visitors from engaging with your brand, but can also make them lose trust in who you are. Think of your website as your store front. Would you visit a store if it looks shabby from the outside, or is in a remote location? You wouldn't. Ensure your website has a clean, professional and engaging design that is easy to navigate and visually appealing.
  3. Lack of Clear Call-to-Actions (CTAs): How do you make sure your visitors can take action such as purchase a product, download an eBook or white paper, or fill out a form for follow up on your website? If all your website has a Contact Us form, most visitors will just ignore it. Each page of your website should offer a call to action to your visitor. Remember, a lost visitor is a lost customer. If visitors don't know what action to take next, they're less likely to convert into leads. Make sure your website has clear CTAs prompting visitors to contact you, subscribe to your newsletter, or make a purchase.
  4. Irrelevant or Low-Quality Content: When was the last time you bought from a retail store where you found their products to be unappealing? Quality matters. Similarly, for your website, content is king when it comes to attracting and retaining website visitors. Content includes the Headings, paragraphs, snippets, testimonials, images, videos, white spaces, and so much more. Many owners fall in the trap of writing paragraphs of content that is really poor. How many of your visitors will enjoy reading that and take action? Ensure your website content is relevant, informative, and engaging. Low-quality or outdated content can drive visitors away. Also, do not copy content from other websites and post them on your website without attribution or permission.
  5. Slow Loading Speed: Performance matters. Who likes driving a slow car these days, or standing in long lines? Everyone wants fast experience. If your website takes too long to load, visitors are likely to bounce before even seeing your content. Optimize your website's speed by compressing images, minifying code, and using a reliable hosting provider.
  6. Lack of Social Proof: Do you have happy clients? If you do, share them boldly on your website. If you don't have happy clients, work on that first. Get your clients' testimonials, write their case studies, and share their reviews not only on your website but also on your social media. Social proof helps build trust with prospective visitors and generates leads. If your website lacks social proof, visitors may hesitate to engage with your brand.
  7. Not Mobile-Friendly: More than 60% of the users access websites on mobile. Did you check how your website appears on mobile? How easy it is to navigate and take action? Does your website load quickly? With more people accessing the internet via mobile devices, it's crucial that your website is mobile-responsive. If your website doesn't provide a good user experience on mobile devices, not only you would be missing out on potential leads but also rank poorly on search engines.
  8. Weak Value Proposition: Not every owner knows how to share their unique value: the Why? Why customers are buying from you? What's different? Clearly communicate the value your product or service provides to visitors. If they don't understand why they should choose you over your competitors, they're unlikely to convert into leads.

To address the above factors, consider conducting a thorough audit of your website to identify areas for improvement. You may also want to gather feedback from visitors or consult with a web design and marketing professional for further assistance. Need help with your website lead generation?
