Values that drive performance and commitment

Values that drive performance and commitment

Article content
At Bouygues, our culture and values are the most precious thing we share.

We are a services company where the most important resource is our people. Their drive, performance and commitment depend primarily on a shared corporate culture anchored in shared values.

Bouygues is a family-owned company founded 73 years ago in France as a construction firm. For a long time, our culture was passed down on an informal basis by our managers, employees and members of the Minorange guild, which was founded by Francis Bouygues to recognise the best workers on our construction sites.

Over the course of its history, our company has undergone profound changes, and today it is a diversified services group operating in 80 countries and in four sectors of activity: in construction, through COLAS , Bouygues Construction and Bouygues Immobilier ; in energies and services, through EQUANS ; in telecommunications, through Bouygues Telecom , and in media, through Groupe TF1 . This transformation has ramped up in recent years on the back of strong international growth, the recruitment of many talented individuals with varied backgrounds and, more recently, the acquisition of Equans and its 70,000 employees.

Due to  our significant recruitment needs - for example, we are the third largest recruiter in France[1] and the largest non-British employer in the UK - we also need to ensure that our management model is adapted to the expectations of new generations.

Drawing on our history and culture, we must regularly ask ourselves: who are we and who do we want to become?

That's why we decided to define a common core of values to be shared by everyone, in all of Bouygues’ subsidiaries. Rooted in our cultural fundamentals, these values are:

  • Respect: treat others how you would like to be treated.
  • Commitment: for us, commitment is about giving your heart and soul.
  • Pioneering: bold innovation, not blind ambition.
  • Sharing: at Bouygues, knowledge and experience are meant to be passed on.

Occasionally the Bouygues group still gets categorised as a conglomerate. This term does not resonate with us, since a conglomerate is simply a group of companies working together solely for financial ends. Bouygues is the antithesis of a conglomerate. We’re a diversified services group unified by core values.

These values bring the women and men of Bouygues closer together. They harmonise our management practices, help to retain our talents and focus our energies on achieving our objectives. They are a driver of performance and commitment, which are particularly valuable in the uncertain world in which we live.

Bouygues is a group with a unique corporate culture whose purpose is to make life better for as many people as possible for the common good.

Bouygues is above all about human endeavour.

What an inspiring reflection on the power of values-driven leadership. Bouygues has demonstrated how a deep-rooted corporate culture can evolve gracefully while staying true to its origins. Your emphasis on respect, commitment, pioneering spirit, and sharing not only creates a cohesive global workforce—it sets a powerful example for the entire construction and infrastructure industry. In a world where many companies chase scale at the expense of identity, Bouygues stands out as a model to emulate: a family-founded enterprise that has scaled internationally without losing sight of its people-first ethos. Your ability to harmonize purpose and performance across sectors and continents is a testament to visionary leadership. Thank you for sharing this. The industry—and the world—needs more companies like Bouygues.
