The Data City is a tech company up that creates the best lists of companies in the UK’s emerging economy.

What they do❓

Provide comprehensive, up-to-date lists of companies in the #UK's new economy. They fffer a unique industrial classification system that reflects what companies actually do, not just their registered SIC code.

🔑Key Features!

  • Web-Based Classification: Classifies companies based on their online presence.

  • Detailed Data: Includes employee numbers, location, turnover, and up to six years of financial history.
  • Powerful Tools: Offers exploration, analysis, and mapping tools for companies and their data.

So, instead of classifying companies by the SIC code that the company chose when it registered, they classify companies by what they say they do on the web!

Then they add data on how many people a company employs, where it operates, what its turnover is, and much more, including up to six years of historical financial #information.

Finally, they help you to explore, analyse, and map those companies, their finances, and their activities using our unique tools.

They are doing it by:

  • Working in the open 🤝
  • Publishing what they do as they do it 📰
  • Using open data and the open web 🌐
  • Crowdsourcing input 🧑🤝🧑
  • Making friends and being helpful 🤗

Who benefits:

  • Policymakers 🏛️
  • Economists 📈
  • Investors 💰
  • Analysts 📊

Company's Foundation!👇

The Data City rapidly scaled its technology, gaining early support from KPMG . Two years later, they lead in providing real-time industrial data, serving clients like the Department of #Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Greater Manchester Combined Authority , Leeds City Council , #KTN, Portsmouth City Council , #Optimat, #Hatch.

Now, leaders who use technology and data to shape industrial strategy and investment decisions can see the impact when they gain access to exclusive data and insights that no one else can produce!

Funding Rounds!💸

The Data City secured its largest investment since 2017, nearly doubling its valuation from £10 million (2023) to £19 million. This follows a record growth year, including a 63% turnover increase to £1.25m and the creation of ten new senior roles.

The funding, from Oxford Economics , will enhance global data infrastructure, expand services for #multinational clients, and support a US joint venture. The investment underscores the rising demand for AI-driven business intelligence, combining The Data City's platform with Oxford Economics' #forecasting expertise.

They are accelerating their mission of establishing a new global industrial classification system, after securing £2M Series A Investment from Oxford Economics .

Adrian Cooper , CEO of Oxford Economics, commented: “Our clients need access to data that reflects the economy as it is today, not how it was classified in 2007. The Data City is redefining how businesses, investors, and policymakers understand industries. We’re excited to support their next phase of growth.”

QUESTION⁉️

Is the 'democratization' of economic data, as pursued by The Data City, truly beneficial for all stakeholders, or does it risk creating information overload and potential misuse?
