Putting purpose to play, seven years on at the Happy Slam

A big part of the world of tennis – is fleeting glory. Heros are born – as if from nothing. And just as easily they vanish into oblivion. Occasionally, however, comes a star who burns brighter than their wins and losses on-court and shines a light on everything around them. We are inspired by these stars – and aspire to deliver digital innovations for the sport that do the same. That’s exactly what we’ve sought to do as Digital Innovation Partner of the Australian Open (AO). We’ve worked hard to amplify human potential with innovations that make them all more – AO fans, players, coaches, sports media, and even the communities where AO thrives.

As AO 2025 marches towards its final weekend, let me give you a sneak peek into how we’ve partnered with Tennis Australia to make the Happy Slam happier since 2018. Here are seven ways in which we’ve done that - on and off court:

 1. Firsts that make a lasting impact. Last year, we launched Rafa Forever, then one of the world’s first athlete collection using gen AI. It gave fans a canvas to unleash their imagination, and immortalize a moment with their favourite player, their way. This year too, we’re opening a whole new legion of fandom for AO with Beyond Tennis - the world’s first gen AI tennis league that will build new connections by enabling virtual engagement for fans with players and making them part of a shared story.

 2. Fast forward into the future. Infosys Fan Zone has been a launchpad for tennis fans to traverse new worlds, be it stepping right on to Rod Laver or taking off on intergalactic tennis adventures like Moon Tennis. This year, we’re beaming fans up to the future, where gen AI will conjure magical new virtual reality fantasy courts on their command. We won’t just be measuring fan footfall, we’ll be counting their smiles.

 3. The ball is in your court, with AI.  Across cycles of AI from machine learning to agentic AI, we’ve brought technology to centre court. From our very first AI in 2019, we’ve always had AI Videos, which deconstructed the game for media first, and then players and coaches, helping them spot patterns of play and strategize. In 2025, AI Videos for Players continue to be a constant, delivering insights seconds before players take the serve and right after they step off the baseline.

 4. Perfecting the virtual show. One of our most meaningful innovations was the AO Virtual Hub. During the pandemic, our teams worked to recreate Melbourne Park digitally and bring the Slam down under to those across the globe, serving 360-degree court views, rock concerts, and even culinary masterclasses. If you couldn’t be there, this came close. And in disruption, we found innovation for AO to go on, and be as AO as it could be, virtually.

 5. Standing support beyond the court. Our partnership faced adversity together. When the Australian land was scorched over in 2020, we stepped up by contributing to the ‘Aces for Bushfire’ relief fund. In 2023, when AO created the ‘Tennis Plays for Peace’ initiative, we joined in with solidarity for those impacted.

 6. Inspiring a dream. For four years now, we’ve been nurturing future leaders with a grassroots initiative to power learning with Infosys Springboard. We are using tennis to become the medium to engage young minds in STEM and get them curious about data and analytics.

 7. Finding our brand ambassadors. We’ve seen how our tech-play and tennis together inspire our clients. That has led us to further our commitment to the sport. In Rafael Nadal and Iga Świątek, we’ve found ambassadors with the grace to keep us grounded and the grit to remind us that whatever’s next, we’re game.

As you make the walk from Garden Square to Rod Laver Arena, you’ll find Infosys there, two floors of the Fan Zone, on every court, and on the Match Centre as you load up the AO app. It’s not just the fact that we’re there though, and that we’re there to play with purpose that I hope will make you stop and notice. We’ll be right here from love all the first Monday, right through to tournament point on the final Sunday, and with you as you navigate you next thereon.

Truly amazing work over the years, Sumit Virmani and Team Infosys. Delighted to see how Infosys is shaping tennis's digital future not through technology alone but also through the lens of human connection. The full range of experiences and indeed the evolution from AI match analysis to immersive fan experiences like Beyond Tennis reflect how technology can enhance rather than replace human engagement. Am particularly intrigued by how these innovations (even through covid) are creating new behavioural patterns in the manner in which fans (at the stadium and those online), players, and even their coaches interact with the sport. This is truly anthropology meeting innovation in real-time! Well done!
