A Matter of Character

A Matter of Character

Just yesterday, I shared thought around PURPOSE. It got me thinking about my own sense of same. As part of a sort of pace group I am in, I just offered up this summary of thought around such for me professionally.

Noble leadership is my just cause, if you will. Moving the needle on same matters to me, and to the world (locally, globally and glocally) I believe and contend humbly. And, such leadership is grounded in the exploration and practice of Character.

CHARACTER MATTERS

It does. Indeed and in deed. Character matters, especially in these times and forward. Consider these offerings from the Ivey School of Business.

My own longstanding work with The Virtues Project speaks to this... as does my experience over the years with both Dale Carnegie Training (1987-2001) and Personality Dimensions (2006-Present). Temperament is a perspective on aspects of Character that are present, almost naturally. Dale Carnegie himself spoke to the notion of appealing to the "nobler motives", which implies we have them latent within. The work of Stephen Covey speaks to such too. Considerable work "out there" directly or indirectly speaks to this idea. And... indeed, for me, I wrote a simple book on character back in 2012. All that said, Character is the application and practice of a myriad of faces, forms ad facets of same... we call virtues. We work with 118, but there are more.

... and with the use of the 5 Strategies of the Virtues Project, we help explore and advance leadership and cultures of same, Yes, there is a growing science of character. And, virtues matter. Nobility matters. Russell Zehtab speaks to this I find. And Nobility, its practice, is driven by the study and advancement of Character, real world and real time. My thought and questions to you are these. Consider the list of 118 virtues noted above. What virtues are latent and manifested in you that are strong, present and consistent? Name them to claim them. Own them, as strengths. Also, what virtues presented above are those around which you seek to continue to develop? How can you better practice them to develop thusly? Set in place a game plan for moving forward with your strengths of character and further developing those needing same.
