Generative AI is evolving at an incredible pace. What started as a tool for generating text has quickly expanded into a multi-modal powerhouse capable of seeing, hearing, reasoning, and even creating in ways that mimic human intelligence. For professionals paying ancillary attention, the journey and press can feel overwhelming - but understanding AI’s root capabilities in how it takes in, transforms, and generates information is the first step to harnessing its potential.

It's not about what AI will do for you, it's about what you will do with AI! And, the better you understand these emerging capabilities of AI, the better position you will be in to integrate them in your work and life in valuable ways.

Below is a timeline of 14 key milestones from the last 2.25 years in the evolution of generative AI capabilities, breaking down what each capability means, how it applies to everyday life, and how businesses can use it to drive value. Alongside these milestones, we also examine the structure of AI’s capabilities using three key categories: "In," "Do," and "Out." The "In" column represents the various forms of input - such as text, images, or sound - that AI has the ability to take in. The "Do" column highlights AI’s processing abilities, showcasing how it can generate, analyze, enhance, or execute on information. Finally, the "Out" column captures AI’s capabilities at "generating" meaningful outputs including strings of text, images, sounds, and automated actions. Understanding this framework helps contextualize how AI is evolving, and how you can shift your mindset from it being a passive tool to it being an active partner in completing both everyday and professional tasks that involve digital information.

The fact that it's now here is quite incredible, and a tad scary. Its crazy that this timeline is only 2.25 years! I'm seeing companies spending a lot of time on how to incorporate AI but not much on how to integrate it thoughtfully. There seems to be a gap from senior leadership to the front line that is expected to use AI in their day jobs. That gap needs to be addressed to ensure seamless execution!
