Inside Amazon’s 1 million robot milestone—and the new AI model powering it

A robot zooming around an Amazon warehouse and calculating distance in real time with its built in AI capabilities.

Amazon’s robotics and AI program has achieved two significant milestones with the deployment of our millionth robot and the introduction of DeepFleet, a new generative AI foundation model.

Operating across more than 300 facilities worldwide, our position as the world’s largest manufacturer and operator of mobile robotics continues to grow. DeepFleet functions like an intelligent traffic-management system, optimizing robot movement throughout our fulfillment centers and improving fleet travel efficiency by 10%, which enables faster deliveries and lower costs for customers.

Since 2012, our robotics program has evolved from a single robot type to a diverse fleet including Hercules, Pegasus, and Proteus robots. And through various training initiatives, we’ve helped upskill over 700,000 employees, creating new opportunities in technical roles.

How Amazon engineered the world's most powerful AI computing system

A close-up of a hand holding a super powerful AWS trainium chip.

Amazon has unveiled Project Rainier, a powerful computing system designed to train advanced AI models. The one-of-its-kind machine is built with Trainium2, our custom-designed computer chip that is capable of completing trillions of calculations a second.

Project Rainier uses AWS’s custom-built UltraServer, which packs 64 Trainium2 accelerator chips into four physical servers, maximizing density and efficiency. These servers are combined into a new type of compute solution with unprecedented scale. This clustering allows AI models to train faster across thousands of interconnected machines, enabling large foundation models that represent a shift in what’s possible.

By designing everything from the computer chips to the cooling systems themselves, Amazon has created a more efficient way to build powerful AI. Project Rainier also features special networking technology that allows all parts of the system to communicate, even when scaling to hundreds of thousands of connected computing units.
