Accelerating innovation for resilient and attractive cities
Smart. Sustainable. Inclusive. That's what innovation means to us.
True innovation takes time to build. Innovation is a key aspect of why Bouygues stands out from the crowd. It enables us to address the challenge of climate change, help preserve resources, embrace new practices, keep pace with advances in technology, contribute to the green and energy transitions and prime ourselves for the advent of more sustainable business models.
Our focus is on practical, sustainable solutions that deliver real-world value. The aim is to make the daily lives of the Group’s customers, partners and employees simpler and, ultimately, to enhance satisfaction for all our stakeholders.
An ecosystem to power progress
In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, addressing urban challenges requires cross-disciplinary collaboration.
That’s why Bouygues places innovation at the heart of an open, interdisciplinary, and global ecosystem.
We work closely with leading academic institutions such as Institut Polytechnique de Paris , Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne ( EPFL ). We also champion initiatives that challenge the status quo, such as HANDILAB , which promotes inclusivity for people with disabilities in urban environments, and Solar Impulse Foundation, which advocates for 1,000 real-world solutions for a cleaner planet.
Faced with complex and evolving challenges, we have made open innovation a guiding principle. We believe collective intelligence — powered by the synergies between our business segments, start-ups, and the academic world — is key to developing sustainable solutions for tomorrow.
A new urban prototype to rethink the city
Climate disruption, an aging population, land scarcity, and growing demands for a better quality of life all point to the urgent need to rethink our urban model. By 2030, nearly five billion people will be living in cities — the equivalent of building a new Manhattan every four months for the next twenty years. But what will that growth look like?
Our “Living Avenues” urban prototype offers a bold, integrated vision for the city of tomorrow. through a systemic and integrated approach. Developed in collaboration with architect Jean-Marc Shivo and drawing on innovative solutions from across the Bouygues group, this real-world experiment explores new ways to address major urban challenges. It is built on four interconnected pillars that form the foundation of a more sustainable and appealing urban future:
- Energy: smarter consumption paired with local, low-carbon energy production to reduce neighbourhood-level environmental impact.
- Water: circular and efficient water management to address increasing supply stress.
- Biodiversity: greening urban spaces to cool cities, encourage local wildlife, and restore ecosystems.
- Living together: inclusive, intergenerational, and equitable cities that adapt to changing social needs and strengthen community bonds.
They guide us in developing practical urban strategies — such as adding extra storeys to buildings, better use of underground spaces, and gentle densification — all with a shared goal: to balance quality of life, environmental responsibility, and urban resilience for the future.
Our subsidiaries in action: practical solutions for sustainable cities
- Permeable surfaces by COLAS : innovative materials to increas soil permeability, encourage rainwater infiltration and limit the risk of flooding.
- Scale One by Bouygues Construction : an open innovation platform that brings ideas to life — in real-world construction environments. Building better, faster, and with a smaller environmental footprint.
- The “Signature Gardens” concept by Bouygues Immobilier : developed in collaboration with environmental engineers, the Signature Garden reimagines green space in the city — cooling neighbourhoods and boosting biodiversity, all while reconnecting people with nature.
- The remote-controlled robot by EQUANS : This remote-controlled construction robot meets two major challenges, namely reducing physical strain on workers and improving site safety. By enabling precision manoeuvres to be carried out remotely, it helps teams to carry out risky or repetitive tasks with greater ease and accuracy.
- The Wi-Fi 7 Bbox router by Bouygues Telecom : a showcase of responsible innovation. The latest Wi-Fi 7 Bbox router combines exceptional performance (lightning-fast speeds), sleek in-house design, and eco-conscious manufacturing — earning TÜV Rheinland Green Product certification.
- TF1+ by the Groupe TF1 : premium French-language content, free and smarter than ever. TF1+, the Group’s streaming platform, delivers an enhanced viewing experience powered by AI — including smart summaries and personalised profiles.
Shaping tomorrow’s cities — together
The city of the 20th century has reached its limits. Faced with unprecedented challenges — from climate change and resource scarcity to social inequality and biodiversity loss — rethinking how we build and live in cities is no longer optional. We must find new ways to bring together quality of life, environmental responsibility, and technological innovation.
That’s the driving force behind everything we do at Bouygues. Together with our partners, we’re committed to turning this vision into reality — building cities that are more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable for today’s communities and those to come.
Across all our business segments, we’re developing pioneering solutions that address the economic, social, and environmental challenges of our time. This capacity to innovate means that we can help shape a better future — and deliver meaningful progress that improves daily life for as many people as possible.
This all sounds nice on the surface, but what about your China compliance? You’re out here celebrating sustainability while ignoring the fact your Chinese customers and employees are exposed to huge legal risks. China isn’t messing around — non-compliance means jail time and multi-million dollar fines.

1wHy, it is difficult to consider that we are very near to solve problems by using urban cities concepts who are including methods and environnemental know how. I think that we are in a developing theory about knew urban concepts including environnemental points but we can not yet resolve the problems whitch are explanate and considered as tel actually. BY is in the right way to find and applicate new concepts as your four pillars, have a nice time, regards- sorry for my english

1wImpressive vision Christophe. You frame open‑innovation, technology, human capital and resilience as interlocking pillars—and that’s exactly what cities need now. Data shows every $1 spent on adaptation returns up to $43. Digital tools—from AI-driven digital twins to public‑finance tech—boost resilience while supporting equity and citizen inclusion. I’ve seen similar impact in city projects where citizen‑centered hackathons accelerated green‑infrastructure pilots and spurred private investment. How might Groupe Bouygues expand these models via urgent partnerships—especially in emerging markets—to replicate local co‑creation at scale? IEEE Smart Cities
