Often mistakenly called “Wembley Way”, the Olympic Way is the gateway from Wembley Park tube station to the iconic Wembley Stadium, with thousands of spectators walking along this road to every event. This road underwent development in recent years and as part of its transformation was lined on either side with trees. This Friday England play India at a stadium, completed in 2012, where AKT II worked with Hopkins Architects to design an international standard iconic cricket Stadium for the Maharastra Cricket Association, giving 55,000 fans the perfect view of the action. The design included facilities for members at a range of levels: from corporate boxes and a member’s pavilion, to leisure amenities such as a swimming pool and spa. The terraces were located with the sport in mind, aiming to align spectators with the wickets to provide the best vantage point. We undertook parametric modelling to boost the ‘C-values’ (the quality of vision from the seat to the event); as a result, stands were elevated to maximise views for those members on the lower tiers. The aim was to create a stadium with minimal use of columns that is lightweight and cost-effective, yet able to withstand extremes of seismic activity and redirect sunlight. Lightweight tiers formed from steel and precast concrete span up to 24 m, with short fabric canopies over the east and west stands and a 50 m-long canopy over the south-facing pavilion to simultaneously keep spectators in the shade and reduce shadow on the pitch itself. Strengthening elements such as the circulation cores provide a light, reasonably flexible structure with extra bracing. AFL Architects to help shape the future of the Portuguese National Stadium AFL Architects has announced its involvement in the proposed refurbishment of the iconic Portuguese National Stadium in Vale do Jamor, Lisbon. Following the official announcement from the FPF - Federação Portuguesa de Futebol and Ordem dos Arquitectos, AFL Architects is part of the winning team behind this transformative design, alongside Aires Mateus and gonçalves vieira _ cruz. The National Stadium, a Listed heritage site located near Lisbon’s city centre, is set to undergo a sensitive and innovative redesign. The proposal, which won first place in the 2024 competition, envisions a modernised venue that enhances the experience for athletes, spectators, and staff, with significant upgrades across its facilities. These changes will ensure the stadium continues to serve as a premier destination for football, rugby, and athletics, all while preserving its unique integration into the natural landscape. Honouring the Past While Designing for the Future The National Stadium’s integration within its topographical context is its defining feature and greatest uniqueness. Updating the stadium’s functional brief requires a return to this founding concept: seamlessly embedding the structure into the natural landscape of the Vale do Jamor. Respecting the site’s heritage through its topography is central to recapturing the essence of the original design. The proposed intervention delicately extends the stadium’s program into the slope, embedding new elements into the terrain while suspending the redesigned roof above the hillside. This new roofline harmonises with the central complex, including the Honour Stand and the Colonnades, creating a unified dialogue between architecture and landscape. The roof’s design draws inspiration from the influence of the original project, subtly merging with the surrounding topography and freeing the structure uphill. It reconnects with the natural terrain, framing the built heritage without imposing on it. This approach ensures the roof integrates into a continuous landscape gesture, avoiding artificial alterations to the land. Ballarat’s $50 Million Sports Revamp: A Major Boost for Local Infrastructure as Head Contractor Selected for Build! The Ballarat Major Events Precinct is getting a significant upgrade, with a redevelopment project that will enhance Mars Stadium and the surrounding facilities. A joint venture between Kane Constructions Pty Ltd and Nicholson Construction has been appointed as the head contractor for this highly anticipated project. This redevelopment will increase Mars Stadium's seating capacity by 5,000, bringing it to 10,000, along with the addition of a new athletics track and pavilion. The project also includes upgrades to amenities, landscaping, and accessibility, creating a more inclusive and vibrant space for the local community and visitors. Scheduled to begin in early 2025, the project is part of the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, supported by Development Victoria and Sport and Recreation Victoria.
