On this #WorldRefugeeDay, we highlight the rights and protection of unaccompanied and separated migrant children, among the most vulnerable in Europe. A 2024 Council of Europe report reviews how 22 member states are implementing the Recommendation of the Committee of Ministers on effective guardianship for children in migration. These children, who cross borders without a parent or caregiver, face heightened risks of exploitation, abuse, and neglect. Effective guardianship systems are an essential safeguard, ensuring children are supported, heard, and protected. While progress has been made, challenges persist: ✔️ Inconsistent legal frameworks ✔️ Delays in guardian appointments ✔️ Gaps in child participation, training & resources ✔️ Limited coordination between authorities Yet, promising practices, especially those supporting children fleeing the Russian aggression against Ukraine, show what is possible.
