🫀 Powering the platform behind The Circuit – the UK’s national defibrillator network.
When British Heart Foundation set out to strengthen 'The Circuit', a critical system that helps ambulance services locate defibrillators when 999 is called in response to a cardiac arrest, they needed a technology partner who could ensure stability, scalability, and future-ready performance.
That’s where we came in.
Working closely with BHF, we:
🔧 Transitioned 'The Circuit' into our support framework.
🚀 Upgraded its .NET framework for long-term performance.
📈 Introduced real-time telemetry to monitor system health.
📍 Supported a major milestone: 100,000 defibrillators registered.
This work helps ensure ambulance services across the UK have access to the most accurate, up-to-date data every 60 seconds.
Together with BHF and the power of Microsoft Azure technology, we delivered a smarter platform and faster access to critical information for when it matters most.

The British Heart Foundation has been in existence for over 63 years now and our vision and mission is to free the world from the fear of heart and circulatory diseases, so it's really simple to stop as many people dying of heart problems as possible. The circuit is the national defibrillator network. It connects to the ambulance services all across the UK and it allows them to identify the location of the nearest defibrillator in someone has a cardiac arrest so that the circuit has replaced. 14 localised, very labour intensive solutions with a single data source that synchronises with all of the ambulance services. It's an automated system using the latest technology that has reduced that admin burden for the ambulance services. Say the circuit is built on the Microsoft stack using Azure technologies. We also use Azure integration to push data to the ambulance services so they receive an update of our circuit database every 60 seconds which allows them to have the most up to date. View on where the fabulous are located, when they're available and if they're emergency are ready as well. So the circuit recently celebrated a huge milestone, which is 100,000 registered defibrillators in the UK. Every year there are more than 30,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests and currently less than one in 10 people survive. But through early intervention through CPR and access to a defibrillator, that can more than double the chances of survival. So right from the start, we recognized in Hitachi Solutions a potential partner. That would listen to us and really recognise the value of what we were trying to achieve, the life saving benefit of what we were trying to build and support. I think the team brought a real interest in the subject matter of out possible cardiac arrest. They wanted to understand what happens with the ambulance services and the other partners that we were working with. So they really took time to understand those that problem and the relationship. The technology around defibrillators is also evolving and smart defibrillators are becoming more commonplace. We're very lucky that we have. Technology partner like Hitachi Solutions to help us to identify how the circuit itself needs to evolve as the technology around the different relations need to evolve. There's a huge amount of really exciting things in the backlog for us as a team, lots of small enhancements to the platform as well as more significant things that we're looking at. And I'm really confident in the partnership we have with the Touchy Solutions to help us achieve that looking to the future. So we want everybody who knows where there's a defibrillator to get it registered on the circuit. To talk to the person who's responsible for it and make sure that we get it on the circuit, because without knowing that they exist, we can't direct people to that life saving help.
Proud to share one of our latest achievements at Hitachi Solutions for BHF – not just for the technical success, but for how we made it happen.
This project was more than code and deadlines. It was about building trust, learning to work as one team, and creating real collaboration across 4 European entities. That’s one of the things we value most at Hitachi: the power of people coming together.
What makes it even more meaningful? It’s a project for BHF – the British Heart Foundation. A mission to help save lives, powered by technology.
It’s a strong reminder that when IT is done right, it can go beyond borders – and serve a purpose far greater than itself.
This is the kind of impact we strive for. 💙
