You Don’t Have to Be First Choice Congratulations! And it doesn’t matter if you’re the first choice as long as you get chosen. What do they call the medical (or in my case, doctoral) program graduate with the lowest GPA? Doctor. We all know Ringo wasn’t the first Beatles drummer. Does it matter that Hugh Jackman was not the first choice to play Wolverine in the X-Men movies? Or that Bryan Cranston was not the first choice to play Walter White in Breaking Bad? Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City? Not the first idea. Bruce Willis was far from the first choice to play John McClane in Die Hard. How much of that is due to effort and persistence and surprise talents of those third or fourth (or in GOAT quarterback Tom Brady’s case, 199th) choices, those small fish in big ponds, those finishers gasping and lunging across the finish line? All you need is the opportunity. Once you have the opportunity, make the most of what you do with it, to be the best solution to somebody’s problem. It’s always possible that what COULD have been WOULD have been better than what WAS, but it’s awfully hard to imagine. So welcome to the party, pal! Think about your opportunity, not about why or whether you were the second or third or fourth choice. What do you think? (Or do you have any examples that are less than 15 years old?) While preorders are critical, anytime a friend has a book come out I prefer to get it IN the store that day to: 1) ensure some launch day foot traffic to show demand 2) tell the staff they're either low on inventory or (in this case!) SOLD OUT and clearly need to reorder fast! 3) make the store aware of the title if they never stocked it Today was pub day for these 3 titles, all of which I now happily have in my apartment and can't wait to dig into: - Daisy Auger-Domínguez Burnt Out To Lit Up - Adriana Carrig The Power Of Little Words - Terry Szuplat Say It Well I'm lucky enough to be attending book talks for all three so posts about each will likely follow... And for now, highly recommend following each of these authors (and all around incredible humans!) as you'll see some of their posts about their books and more. And if like me you're hoping to write your own non-fiction masterpiece, one more related launch from today: Fran Hauser and Bethany Saltman, cohosts of the insightful BookBound podcast, launched their substack today. Hubris, infallibility complex, 'not me guv', or a toddler in the supermarket who has been told they can't have the latest magazine. The arrogance of some of the statements, the total lack of empathy with investors, or humility to take responsibility are staggering. No one comes out of this with any credit - not LINK, The FCA , HL and of course Woodford. That it happened some 32 years after the concept of a regulated Financial Services industry was first raised beggars belief. The industry is in a far, far better place than it was - but this shows us we haven't come far enough. Great piece Elliot Gulliver-Needham
