- [Narrator] While in college, Joe Landolina's failed experiment led to an accidental life-changing discovery. This sparked a business that merged his love for research with his goal of helping others. - [Joe] I had completed my summer of research at Columbia, and the work that I was doing there was using an algae-based scaffold. So basically this structure made of algae that you could take stem cells and use that scaffold to help differentiate or convert the stem cells into a target tissue and in this case, it was cartilage. And I thought that was the coolest thing that I'd ever seen. And having access to the lab that I had, I decided, you know what? I'm going to go home and I'm going to make my own cartilage. And so I went out and we had two ponds that were in front of the vineyard, and I raked up a bunch of algae, and I did an extraction of polymers out of this. And I tried to put a scaffold together and obviously failed miserably. I came nowhere near what I was trying to do, but…
