- Depending on your background and also on your mother tongue, you could have a different concept of hierarchy and formality. If you have a Japanese, Chinese or Middle Eastern background for example, you probably consider contradicting your boss very disrespectful and inappropriate. This is related to what is called Power Distance. The more a society accepts that there are different social statuses, the higher it's Power Distance is. America has very low Power Distance while China, Malaysia and Philippines have some of the highest values. And the rest of Asia has higher values than the US. When I was researching for this course one thing that people kept telling me about the idea of hierarchy was in my country, modern companies are Americanized but traditional ones still have hierarchy.
