- Shopify does a great job simplifying things for us. They have tax professionals on hand that set pretty decent defaults. Let's see what those defaults are. Under Settings, Taxes and duties, we can see that they have some recommendations for us right here at the top. This is based on Shopify's locations, so if you've added locations here you'll likely see some sort of notice at the top. You can also manually add areas. So let's scroll down here. And under the United States, I can manually add an area. When you're ready, you can click into one of these areas that they recommend and then click Start collecting. We can then enter our sales tax id. You need to apply for a sales tax from your governing body. For right here, that would be California. For my home office, that would be Colorado. And if you don't have this yet but you know it's coming, you can collect sales tax without filling out this field. That way you don't…
