- Data is everywhere. So data isn't the problem. Getting information out of your data is the problem. Big data can give you access to profound, meaningful information and many possibilities to get totally lost. So what exactly is big data? Adapted from Oracle's definition, big data is larger, more complex data sets, especially from new data sources that can be used to address business problems you wouldn't have been able to tackle before. The benefits of properly managing big data are vast, from gaining important information for product development and predictive equipment maintenance to getting indications of fraudulent behavior and spearheading operational efficiencies. The issues are substantial, including effectively storing and managing the available volumes of data. Sorting through and filtering that data to ensure what is analyzed is relevant, is also essential, along with determining whether to use edge or cloud storage for certain data elements.
