Powerful questions for problem-solving and critical thinking

- When I think of problem solving, I always remember Albert Einstein's quote, "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." To change our thinking, we must first change our questions. When issues arise, a common question we ask is, why did this happen? Depending on the tone, this can come off as judgmental or accusatory. While understanding the root cause is important, we need to open up the dialogue, not shut it down. Two small shifts can make a big difference. First, personalize the question. Instead of why did this happen, ask, "Why do you think this happened?" Do you feel the difference? Second, turn why questions into more powerful what or how questions. We learn this in chapter one. So instead of why did this happen, ask, "What do you see as the root cause?" Or, "What do you think led to this situation?" Or simply, "How did we get here?"
