Admittedly, my first experience running a board meeting had a rocky start. I was all of 26 years old and the previous executive director had unexpectedly resigned due to burnout. I was never trained in this area, which was fine with me -- -- until he left and I was named the new executive director. News flash: the IRS requires nonprofits with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status to have a governing board, and I did not have the slightest idea how to run a board meeting, let alone partner with them in their oversight of our work. At that meeting, I showed up with an agenda I'd made up off the top of my head, and this was pre-internet, so there was no Googling for help. Fortunately, four very gracious leaders from the community were there. They essentially held my hand and walked me through the process. Here's what I learned.
