Start with a blank course shell
- [Instructor] Now that we've customized our Moodle profile and settings, we're ready to begin building our course. In this chapter, we're going to take a look at how to create a course including how to customize the layout, adjust the settings, add content and more. Right now I'm on my site dashboard and I'm going to click on the Effective Team Communications course. Here I can see different courses that I was assigned and I'm going to click on this one. When I do this, it brings me to the Effective Team Communication course page. So here you can see that it's an empty shell. There really isn't much here except for a navigation bar as well as some different weeks. Now, eventually this will be the course dashboard that students will see when they join the course so I want to make sure that it's set up the way that I want it to look. I want to mention again that your site administrator has likely created a default course and shell that looks different than this one. If that's the case, the things we do in this course will still apply, but you might start out with a slightly different layout. Let's first check to make sure that you have the ability to edit the course in the upper right corner. I'm going to click on edit mode. I'll toggle this on, and you see now that I can start editing things and adding things inside of here. Now if for some reason you're not able to edit the course you'll need to talk to your site administrator. In the center of my screen, you'll see that there are some weeks here. Currently we see the 25th of April to the 1st of May, the 2nd of May to the 8th of May. So my course is broken down into weeks. So by default, it's set up by weeks. However, in this section of the course page, you can choose to organize your course however you'd like, whether it's weeks, chapters, units, quarters or any other method. For this course, I want to break it up into different topics or units that the class will be learning about instead of these weeks. And this is something I'll do in the video on course structure. So now that we've taken a look at a blank course shell, it's time to start customizing it.
