- Risk versus reward. What motivates your team? It's going to be different for different people. Let's talk about when you should frame your message in terms of risk and when you should frame it in terms of reward. Understanding the difference will help you to amplify the persuasive strength of your message. What does it mean to be prevention-focused? People who are prevention-focused are generally risk-averse. They tend to focus on safety and protection moreso than advancement and gain. They feel more comfortable knowing that they're able to protect what they already have. How should you persuade someone who is prevention-focused? Your message should be couched in terms of security. As a leader, don't try to guess their fears. Ask them how they're feeling about the situation so you know for sure. Once you're clear on what their key issues are, then you can begin to craft your message.
