- Effective leadership today cannot be one size fits all. It must be flexible and situational. Getting the best performance out of others requires different approaches and behaviors and how you direct, correct and reward performance. In other words, it means using a variety of leadership styles at the right time and in the right way to inspire and empower others to achieve more. Ken Blanchard's Situational Leadership Model is one of the oldest frameworks for leadership styles, but it's still relevant today. Some of the most common leadership styles laid out in his model include directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating. Directing is the basic level of leadership style used for nearly all new employees who need guidance and direction.
