In this video, we'll highlight the importance of addressing the environmental impact of buildings and introduce some key terms crucial for the course, decarbonization, net zero, and carbon neutrality. Buildings globally contribute significantly to environmental challenges, accounting for 37% of carbon emissions and 34% of energy demand. This impact extends beyond numbers, affecting resources, air and water quality, land, and biodiversity. The urgency to address this impact is emphasized by the commitment of over 450 companies pledging $130 trillion through the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero. This commitment reflects the recognition that substantial changes are needed in building practices.
